‘The Little Mermaid’ Goes Offline at 7 P.M. While Magic Kingdom Stays Open

Fantasyland is full of big names. Peter Pan, the Seven Dwarfs, Winnie the Pooh. But there is one redhead who has been holding court in her own seaside corner of Magic Kingdom since 2012, and fans adore her.

We are talking, of course, about Ariel.

Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid opened as part of New Fantasyland, bringing the 1989 film The Little Mermaid to life as a gentle dark ride. Guests climb into clamshells on a moving Omnimover track and float through the movie’s greatest hits, from “Part of Your World” to Sebastian’s show-stopping “Under the Sea” to a run-in with Ursula.

It is sweet, it is easy, and it is one of those rides that works for toddlers and grandparents alike. Which is why this next bit of news is worth knowing before you plan your evening.

The Quick Version

In a hurry? Here is everything you need, no scrolling required.

  • The ride: Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid in Fantasyland
  • The date: Thursday, November 5
  • The new hours: 9:00am to 7:00pm, per the official Walt Disney World attraction page
  • Early Theme Park Entry: The ride still opens at 8:30am for eligible Disney Resort hotel guests
  • Park closing: Magic Kingdom stays open until 10:00pm
  • The reason: Disney has not shared one

The takeaway is simple. If Ariel is on your list for November 5, ride before 7:00pm.

So, Why Is Ariel Leaving Early?

That is the million-dollar question, and right now, there is no official answer. Walt Disney World updated the ride’s hours without explaining the change, and there is no refurbishment on the calendar for Under the Sea at the moment.

What we do know is that the cut is significant. The ride will be closed for the final three hours of Magic Kingdom’s operating day, which is a big chunk of time for anyone who planned to ride after dark.

Wait, Hasn’t This Happened Before?

It has. This is actually the second short schedule change for the ride in 2026.

Back on February 11, Under the Sea was closed for the full day. That closure popped up on the operating calendar about a week in advance, and Disney did not share what work took place. The November 5 early close was also posted with about a week of notice, and it, too, came with no explanation.

Magic Kingdom’s Schedule Shake-Ups, at a Glance

Ariel is not the only one with a calendar change. Here is how this fall’s Magic Kingdom adjustments line up with the earlier one.

Date Attraction What’s happening
December 18, 2026 Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Scheduled return, per Walt Disney World’s calendar
November 5, 2026 Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid Closes at 7:00pm, three hours before the park
November 2, 2026 Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Closed for its first-ever refurbishment
February 11, 2026 Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid Closed for the full day

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened in 2024, so this is the first time the flume ride has gone down for an extended refurbishment. As with any refurb, the December 18 date could still change.

How to Still Get Your Ariel Fix

The early close does not have to wreck your day. A few smart moves will keep you on track.

Go early, especially if you are staying on property. Eligible Disney Resort hotel guests can ride at 8:30am during Early Theme Park Entry, 30 minutes before Magic Kingdom opens to everyone at 9:00am.

Bring the little ones first. Under the Sea has no height requirement, so every member of the family can ride. Morning is a great time to fit it in before Fantasyland gets busier.

Double-check Lightning Lane. If you are booking for November 5, choose an Under the Sea return time that falls before 7:00pm.

Rethink the nightcap. Saving Ariel for your last ride of the night will not work this time. Pick another attraction to close out the evening, since the park stays open until 10:00pm.

Check hours the morning of. Schedules can change, so a quick look at My Disney Experience before you leave your hotel is always a good idea.

Over to You, Fins Up

Three hours might not sound like much, but at Magic Kingdom, it is the difference between a perfect plan and a scramble. Now you know, and you can plan around it.

We will keep watching for any other changes to Ariel’s schedule and let you know if anything new pops up.

Okay, let’s settle a debate. Is Under the Sea better first thing in the morning or as the last ride of the night? Tell us where you stand in the comments. And if you happen to be at Magic Kingdom on November 5, snap a picture of the ride’s entrance for us. We will be living vicariously.
