Universal Orlando Resort is preparing for a holiday season unlike any other, and one of its most recognizable Christmas characters is about to make history.
Every year, millions of families tune in to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a tradition filled with giant balloons, elaborate performances, and beloved characters.
This Thanksgiving, Universal Orlando will officially become part of that tradition in an entirely new way.

The resort has announced that Earl the Squirrel will make his debut as a giant balloon during the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26, 2026.
It’s a major milestone for Universal, especially considering how this particular character became a fan favorite.
Universal Orlando Is Sending Earl the Squirrel to New York City
For the first time ever, Universal Orlando Resort will have its own dedicated balloon featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Earl the Squirrel will float through Manhattan alongside other famous characters, including Bluey and Sorcerer Mickey.
However, Universal isn’t stopping with the balloon.

The resort will also bring a special parade unit featuring dancers, balloon handlers, and a dancing acorn.
It’s an exciting development for Universal fans who have spent years watching Earl become an increasingly important part of the resort’s Christmas celebrations.
Although Universal has worked with Macy’s for years through Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida, this marks the first time the Orlando resort has received its own balloon in the New York City parade.
And Earl’s appearance couldn’t come at a better time, with the parade celebrating its 100th edition.
Earl’s Unusual History Makes His Debut Even More Special
Earl the Squirrel isn’t your typical theme park character.
His story began years ago when Universal employees discovered that something kept damaging the Christmas lights on the park’s holiday tree.
After repeatedly repairing the wires, technicians eventually discovered that a real squirrel had been chewing on them.
The animal was safely relocated, but employees never forgot the experience.
Instead, they began hiding a small squirrel decoration inside the Christmas tree as a playful reference to the incident.
Guests eventually noticed the decoration, and the squirrel developed an unexpected following.
Universal embraced the character’s popularity, eventually introducing Earl as a costumed character with his own merchandise in 2021.
Today, he’s a familiar part of the resort’s holiday festivities.
His appearance was also carefully designed. Universal creative Rob Cametti drew inspiration from classic cartoons and even Cousin Eddie’s winter hat in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989).
Now, that same character is preparing to appear before a national television audience.
Universal Studios Florida Will Receive the Balloon After Thanksgiving
Earl’s appearance in New York City won’t be the end of his holiday adventure.
After participating in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, his balloon will become part of Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida.
The park’s holiday parade runs from November 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027.
However, Earl’s balloon won’t join the festivities until after Thanksgiving.

That distinction matters for guests planning November vacations.
Families visiting during the first two weeks of Universal’s Christmas celebration won’t see the new balloon in the parade, while those arriving after November 26 can look forward to the addition.
Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s already features giant balloons, floats, and performers, making Earl a natural addition to the seasonal entertainment.
His arrival also gives longtime Universal visitors something new to enjoy during a familiar holiday tradition.
A Big Thanksgiving Moment for Universal Fans
The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs November 26 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on NBC.
For fans who can’t attend in person, the television broadcast offers a chance to see Earl’s historic appearance.
It’s remarkable how far the character has come.

A squirrel that once caused trouble with Christmas lights has inspired a holiday mascot, merchandise, and now a giant balloon appearing in one of the country’s most famous parades.
For Universal Orlando, the debut represents another opportunity to share its holiday traditions with audiences beyond Central Florida.
And for fans who have followed Earl’s journey over the years, Thanksgiving morning will be a particularly memorable occasion.
