Marvel Star Speaks Out After Studio Pulls the Plug on ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Marvel Studios will bring Daredevil: Born Again to a close with its upcoming third season, ending a Disney+ series that had once looked poised for a long-term, potentially annual run. Season 3 is slated to debut on the streamer in 2027.

The decision comes alongside a leadership change. Showrunner Dario Scardapane is departing after his contract was not renewed, an exit that arrives roughly two months after production on Season 3 concluded. Post-production is ongoing, and Marvel has not named a successor to oversee the remaining work.

Woll: “It Wasn’t Super Surprising”

Among the first cast members to address the news is Deborah Ann Woll, who has played Karen Page since Netflix launched Daredevil in 2015 and continued the role in the Disney+ revival. Woll discussed the cancellation with ComicBookMovie during press for her new horror feature, The Cycle (2026).

“It wasn’t super surprising to me, no,” Woll told the outlet. “I don’t know about hopes moving forward. I mean, obviously, in my mind, she’s a full person with a full life, and her life will continue. She’s going to continue to fight injustice, and whether they choose to include any of that is up to people far above my pay grade.”

Her remarks frame the series’ conclusion as distinct from the character’s fate. Karen, a journalist and investigator committed to uncovering corruption, is positioned with a greater degree of independence entering Season 3. Marvel has confirmed only that the show is ending; it has made no announcement about retiring any of its characters from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A Troubled Path to Air

Scardapane’s departure is notable given his central role in salvaging the project. Born Again was originally greenlit for 18 episodes under head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord, with early development reportedly steering toward a procedural format rather than a straight continuation of the Netflix narrative.

Marvel reassessed the series during the 2023 Hollywood strikes, after which Corman and Ord exited. Scardapane, whose credits include Netflix’s The Punisher, was brought on along with directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The new creative team reworked substantial portions of the story, filmed a fresh pilot and additional episodes, and realigned the show with the tone of its predecessor.

The reset also restored key cast members. Woll returned as Karen, and Elden Henson came back as Foggy Nelson. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle was reinstated after the actor voiced concerns about the character’s original treatment, and Ayelet Zurer resumed the role of Vanessa Fisk after initially being replaced.

The revamped first season premiered in 2025, pairing Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk once again. A second season followed in 2026.

What Lies Ahead

With cameras down on Season 3, the final installment is expected to stage a concluding clash between Daredevil and Kingpin. The characters’ futures, however, extend beyond the series. Cox’s Murdock has already turned up in other Marvel projects, and D’Onofrio’s Fisk has become an increasingly prominent figure in the studio’s street-level slate. The end of Born Again does not preclude either, or Woll’s Karen, from reappearing elsewhere in the franchise.
