Disney Confirms Converting Hollywood Studios Retail Space to Play Structure for Kids
A newly filed Walt Disney Imagineering permit indicates a playground structure is coming to Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The filing. General construction at 361 Cypress Drive, the address of the former Stage 1 Company Store. The building sits beside the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater, which is now being rethemed as the Glob Theatre.
The giveaway. Disney listed Landscape Structures, Inc. as primary contractor. Landscape Structures is a commercial playground manufacturer.
That contractor listing does the work a vague permit description cannot. “General construction” describes almost anything. A playground manufacturer narrows it considerably, since the company does not build retail interiors, kitchens, or ride systems.
Prior work. Disney has used Landscape Structures for temporary EPCOT festival play zones and for the play area under construction in Pueblo Esperanza at Animal Kingdom’s Tropical Americas.
What concept art showed. Colorful shade canopies over an outdoor interactive zone. The permit suggests an actual play structure, not only an open interactive space.
A Pattern Across Two Lands
Disney has two major lands in active construction. Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom and Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios.
Both include dedicated play areas. Both use the same playground manufacturer.
That is a shift from recent practice. Disney’s new-land formula over the past fifteen years leaned on a headliner attraction, a secondary attraction, retail, and dining. Pandora, Galaxy’s Edge, and Toy Story Land all followed it.
Toy Story Land stands out. It opened with Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Toy Story Mania, themed entirely to a child’s toy box, without a playground. Two consecutive new lands, now including one, suggest a deliberate correction.
Retail Space Traded for Play Space
The footprint being converted was a store.
Merchandise sells at its peak inside a brand-new land, which makes that address valuable retail. Disney appears to be choosing a play structure instead.
A shop produces direct per-guest revenue. A playground produces none. That tradeoff is the clearest signal in the filing about how Disney is weighting family experience in this expansion cycle.
Why the Coaster Argues for It
Monstropolis is anchored by Disney’s first-ever suspended door-vault coaster, plus the Glob Theatre show.
Coasters carry height requirements, which creates a predictable problem. A family with an older child who wants the coaster and a toddler who cannot ride it needs somewhere for the younger child to be during a queue and two ride cycles.
Rider swap addresses the parents. It does not address the excluded child.
A dedicated play area is the structural answer, which makes a playground more necessary in a coaster-anchored land than in one built around a dark ride.
The Location Is Well Chosen
Placing the playground next to the Glob Theatre solves two recurring problems.
Theater shows run on fixed showtimes and release crowds in large waves. Families arriving early with time to kill, and families exiting a show needing to regroup, both create dead time in the same spot.
A play area absorbs both.
It also gives families an option during the show itself. A theater is the one attraction type a parent cannot discreetly leave partway through, so a nearby playground lets a group split rather than skip the show.
What Parents Get
Seating and shade are scarce in a theme park, aside from rides and restaurants.
A playground is one of the few places where a parent can sit with a clear line of sight while a child stays genuinely occupied. The shade canopies in concept art matter in Central Florida, where an unshaded structure becomes unusable by late morning.
It also heads off the common source of toddler meltdowns on park days, which is extended overstimulation without a physical outlet.
Still Unconfirmed
The permit indicates a play structure is planned. It does not specify size, indoor or outdoor placement, interactive features, or target age range. Concept art is not the final design, and Disney has not formally announced the playground.
Monstropolis opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027.
