Disney’s New ‘Star Wars’ Prequel Confirmed, Story by Lucasfilm Boss Dave Filoni
The Ahsoka Season 1 finale skipped over one major question: how did Ezra Bridger actually make it back?

When the series wrapped in October 2023, Ezra (Eman Esfandi) had been rescued from exile, reunited with old friends, and returned to the main Star Wars galaxy. The journey connecting those moments never appeared on screen. More than three years later, Lucasfilm is finally preparing to fill in the gap. It is not doing so on Disney+, though.
Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics have revealed “Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn,” a five-issue prequel miniseries detailing Ezra’s previously unseen escape from Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). Issue one launches January 20, 2027, the same day Ahsoka Season 2 debuts on Disney+.
Where Ahsoka Season 1 Left Ezra
Ezra’s story stretches back to the end of Star Wars Rebels, when he disappeared with Thrawn into a distant galaxy. Ahsoka revealed he had spent years stranded on Peridea.
During the first season, Ezra managed to board Thrawn’s flagship, the Chimaera, by posing as a Night Trooper. From there, the finale jumped straight ahead to his homecoming and an emotional reunion with Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
That ending answered whether Ezra would make it home. It left out how he avoided Thrawn, the Imperial forces, and the Nightsisters along the way. The new comic is built to explore that missing chapter.

Everything We Know About “Escape From Thrawn”
The miniseries was announced at New York Comic Con, held October 8 to 11, and serves as a direct prequel to Ahsoka Season 2. It follows the dangerous path Ezra took after stowing away aboard the Chimaera.
The creative team includes:
- Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, who developed the story
- Rodney Barnes, who is writing the script
- Andrea Di Vito, who is providing the interior artwork
- Phil Noto, who is contributing cover art
The official synopsis teases a relentless chase across hyperspace. It promises a string of threats that make Ezra’s return to the main galaxy far from guaranteed.
The Threats Hunting Ezra Bridger
Ezra will not simply be sneaking off a Star Destroyer. He will be hunted by some of the most dangerous figures in Thrawn’s ranks.
Captain Enoch. Thrawn’s loyal enforcer joins the pursuit, forcing Ezra to stay one step ahead of the Imperial forces.
The Nightsisters. Their dark magic adds a second layer of danger and links the comic to the supernatural elements established throughout Season 1.
Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn remains Ezra’s greatest strategic challenge. The commander is known for predicting his opponents’ moves and exploiting their weaknesses, and the synopsis frames the story as an intricate game across hyperspace. That framing indicates the escape was far more complicated than the finale let on.

Why the Comic Matters for Season 2
With Filoni behind the story, “Escape From Thrawn” is not an unrelated side adventure. It expands directly on the existing Ahsoka narrative, which means it could carry real weight for where Ezra and Thrawn are headed.
There is a catch. By revisiting events the show chose to skip, the comic essentially reworks the ending of the first season, even as fans have been expecting the story to move forward rather than look back.
The same-day launch also signals how Lucasfilm wants the two releases experienced: side by side. Readers can follow Ezra’s journey home just as the television story picks back up.

Who’s Returning for Ahsoka Season 2
Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka Tano, joined by Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn, Esfandi as Ezra, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera. Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) is also among the returning cast. Rory McCann takes over as Baylan Skoll following the death of Ray Stevenson. Season 2 is expected to keep developing the characters and conflicts introduced in the original run.
What It Means for the Mando-Verse
Ahsoka is one piece of a larger web that also includes The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew. Thrawn has been positioned as a major threat to the New Republic and could tie Ahsoka into the wider Mando-Verse. Lucasfilm previously announced a Filoni-directed crossover film, though the studio’s broader release plans have continued to shift.
The franchise’s big-screen ambitions remain active. The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) has reached theaters, and Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) is in ongoing development. For Ahsoka itself, the road beyond Season 2 is unclear, as no third season has been confirmed.
For anyone counting down to the show’s return, “Escape From Thrawn” offers the missing link between the two seasons. Its five-issue format gives Lucasfilm room to explore Ezra’s flight from Thrawn, Enoch, and the Nightsisters in much greater depth than the finale did. Issue one lands January 20, 2027, the same day Season 2 hits Disney+.
