Disney Confirms Super Bowl LXI Will Stream on Disney+ for All Subscribers
Super Bowl LXI is coming to Disney+.
All domestic subscribers get it, plus 55 international markets, at no additional cost.
What Subscribers Get
The same broadcast is airing on ABC and ESPN, with the identical announcing team.
The ESPN Deportes Spanish broadcast is also available on Disney+.
Two Monday Night Football games are coming as well. The first is October 26, Cowboys against Eagles. The second has not been announced.
Disney announced it with a social media promo.
The Game Was Already Historic
Super Bowl LXI marks the first time the game is broadcast on ESPN. It airs on both ABC and ESPN.
Disney+ streaming is the addition.
No Upsell, Which Was Not Guaranteed
Worth stating plainly, because the alternative was obvious.
The game almost certainly would have streamed on ESPN’s service regardless. Disney could easily have used the biggest television event of the year to push Disney+ subscribers into an ESPN add-on.
It did not.
Given how heavily Disney has leaned on tiers and bundles lately, that is a genuinely subscriber-friendly call.
February Is When Streaming Subscriptions Get Cancelled
Here is the strategy.
February is the worst month for streaming retention. Holiday content is done. People are reading January credit card statements clearly for the first time. New Year budget resolutions are still fresh enough to act on.
That is when households cut what they are not using.
Super Bowl LXI lands in February.
So Disney put the biggest television event in America inside the exact month subscribers are most likely to cancel. Anyone planning to pull the plug now has a reason to wait, and inertia usually finishes the job.
The timing is also notable for another reason. Disney+ raised prices last week, with the ad-free Premium tier reportedly going from $18.99 to $21.49, and the response was loud.
A week later, the Super Bowl is included.
Why the October Game Matters
Cowboys and Eagles on October 26 is not filler.
It is a marquee NFC East matchup, and putting it on Disney+ months before the Super Bowl does two useful things.
It stress tests the streaming infrastructure at real scale before millions of people try to load the same stream at once.
And it builds the habit. Subscribers who watch football on Disney+ in October know exactly where to find it in February.
This Costs Disney Nothing
All Super Bowl LXI advertising has reportedly sold out.
So Disney+ distribution cannibalizes nothing. The inventory is already sold, and adding Disney+ viewers increases the audience delivered against the contracts Disney has already signed.
Advertisers get more impressions than they paid for. Disney gets a stronger position when pricing the next one. Zero incremental ad cost.
Wide distribution at a sold-out event is nearly free upside.
The International Number Is Not a Footnote
Fifty-five markets.
The Super Bowl has never been the international event it is domestically, and NFL international growth has been a league priority for years.
Putting the game in front of Disney+ subscribers across 55 markets with no additional purchase is an unusually cheap way to expand that audience. For those subscribers, it is a value they did not pay for. For the NFL, it is the distribution it would otherwise buy.
The Spanish Feed Deserves Credit
Including the ESPN Deportes broadcast is a real decision, not a checkbox.
US Hispanic households are a major NFL audience, and watching in Spanish has typically meant finding a separate channel or service. Having both feeds inside one app a family already pays for removes genuine friction.
Does It Retain Subscribers
Partly, and temporarily.
One event does not hold somebody for a year. Anyone canceling in March still cancels in March, and the Super Bowl does not address the price objection that drove last week’s backlash.
What it does is get subscribers through February. Add the Monday Night Football games, and Disney has built reasons to stay across a longer stretch than any single show could.
It also sends a better message than a discount would. A price cut says the product was overpriced. Adding the Super Bowl says the product got bigger.
Also Coming
ABC is promoting heavily, including a Super Bowl night on Dancing With the Stars.
ESPN is running a sweepstakes for a chance to attend in person.
