Disneyland Announces Closure Date for “it’s a small world,” Effective October 30
There is a version of “it’s a small world” that converts skeptics, and it exists for about eight weeks a year.
If your only experience is the standard ride, the reputation makes sense. The song, the doll faces, the fourteen minutes. Plenty of guests walk out politely.
Then they ride it in December and understand what everyone means.
The holiday overlay at Disneyland is not a decoration hung on an existing attraction. It is a full transformation, inside and out, and it is arguably the most impressive seasonal change Disney does anywhere.
The closing date is now set.

The Calendar
Per the Disneyland Resort refurbishment calendar, the ride goes down on October 30.
Over the following weeks, Disney adds decorations representing holiday traditions from around the world, and the theme song gets blended with classics including “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Halls.”
No reopening date announced.
Last year, the ride closed early on October 29, and the overlay opened on November 13. If that holds, expect about two weeks.
Why Two Weeks
People underestimate this job.
The exterior alone gets 400,000 lights, ornate seasonal landscaping, and a Santa hat on the attraction’s iconic clock face.
Inside, festive decorations run throughout, and the audio is re-scored rather than swapped. Blending the theme with holiday standards means the music has to work across every scene, which is far more involved than playing a different track.
Two weeks is not Disney dragging. That is what an install this size takes.
The Catch Nobody Mentions
Important for October visitors.
Closing October 30 means the attraction is unavailable for the final stretch of Halloween Time.
If small world matters to your group and your trip lands at the very end of October, you miss it in both forms. Standard version closed, holiday version not open yet.
That gap catches people every single year.
The Season Starts November 13
The full Disneyland Resort holiday season runs November 13, 2026, through January 6, 2027.
That matters because the overlay is an anchor of the whole celebration rather than a standalone change.
It serves as a backdrop for the nighttime spectacular alongside Rivers of America and Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle. All three, plus Main Street, U.S.A., get nightly snowfall.
At Disneyland Park
Main Street gets a 60-foot Christmas tree. Sleeping Beauty Castle becomes a snow-capped Winter Castle lit nightly by 80,000 lights.
Returning entertainment:
- A Christmas Fantasy Parade, reserved seating via a Plaza Inn dining package
- Believe…In Holiday Magic fireworks
- Haunted Mansion Holiday, already running
Mickey, Minnie, and friends appear in new outfits inspired by holiday travel and an alpine gathering. Santa has moved from the Fantasyland Theatre, now home to Bluey’s Best Day Ever.
The Holiday Time Guided Tour returns, booking details later this year.
At Disney California Adventure
World of Color, Season of Light returns after skipping the 2025 season, making it one of this year’s bigger additions.
Cars Land gets another Haul-iday season with lights, bows, and wreaths, the nightly Sh-boom moment, and two ride overlays in Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree.
Disney Festival of Holidays returns with six marketplaces and the Sip and Savor Pass.
Also: Holiday Toy Drummers, Mickey’s Happy Holidays cavalcade, A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland and Miguel, Mirabel’s Gift of the Seasons, and Disney ¡Viva Navidad!
Santa greets guests at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, which becomes a holiday playground.
Everywhere Else
Downtown Disney transforms November 13 with nightly snowfall, seasonal food and drinks, and live entertainment at the Downtown Disney LIVE! Stage.
November 11 through January 6, guests can buy an activity map for Chip and Dale’s Ornament Trail and redeem it for an ornament keepsake.
Resort hotels add trees, a seven-foot gingerbread display at Disney’s Grand Californian modeled on the hotel itself, Santa meet and greets, and holiday dining including Goofy’s Kitchen Celebrates the Holidays and Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast.
Disney is also running 20 percent off hotel stays from October through December 2026.

Want the standard version? You have until October 29.
Want the holiday version? Aim for November 13 or later, though Disney has not confirmed the overlay’s exact opening.
