Disney+ has spent years expanding beyond the streaming service subscribers first encountered when it launched.
October will bring another noticeable change.
Disney has officially confirmed that Playlists are coming to Disney+, introducing a new way for subscribers to watch movies and television episodes without individually choosing what plays next.
It’s part of an October lineup that also shows Disney+ and Hulu becoming increasingly connected.
A Different Way To Use Disney+
Streaming services have traditionally centered around choice. Subscribers open an app, browse through hundreds of options, select something, and repeat the process when they’re finished.
Disney’s new feature offers an alternative.
Playlists will group movies and episodes together around genres, franchises, characters, and moods. Once subscribers select one, content can continue playing without requiring them to manually pick each title.
Disney describes the feature as a “lean-back viewing experience,” and that’s essentially what separates it from simply browsing a collection.
Among the options already confirmed are Pixar Movies, Romantic Comedies, Action and Adventure Movies, Mickey and Friends, Bluey, and Modern Family.
That means someone interested in Pixar, for example, won’t necessarily have to decide exactly which movie they want before they start watching.
Disney Is Starting With Halloween
The timing makes October an ideal month for Disney to expand the concept.
Halloween will receive several dedicated Playlists, including Halloween Movies, Halloween Episodes, Halloween Throwbacks, Huluween Movies, Huluween Episodes, and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror.
Disney also plans to rotate seasonal Playlists throughout the year.
It’s another way for Disney+ to organize an increasingly large library while giving subscribers an experience that feels more like putting on a television channel and watching whatever comes next.
Hulu’s Presence Continues To Grow
Disney’s October schedule also provides another sign of how closely Disney+ and Hulu are becoming connected.
Several programs are scheduled to appear on both platforms.
On October 2, Adventure Time: Side Quests Season 2 and Coven Academy Season 1 will debut across Disney+ and Hulu. Both services will also carry the 2026 Austin City Limits Music Festival livestream.
Hulu Originals aren’t necessarily staying exclusive to Hulu, either. Between Steps premieres across both services October 5, while Merry Berry Love will also stream on both.
Meanwhile, Disney+ continues adding its own programming, including the October 14 premiere of VisionQuest and live episodes of Dancing with the Stars Season 35.
The October changes show Disney continuing to reshape what Disney+ can be.
Subscribers can still search for a specific movie or show whenever they want. But with Playlists joining live programming, podcasts, Hulu content, and traditional on-demand entertainment, Disney+ is becoming much more than a simple streaming library.
