‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Release Date Quietly Changes Months Before Arrival
Marvel has quietly made a change to the rollout of Avengers: Doomsday just months before its theatrical debut.
The blockbuster is currently scheduled to arrive on December 18, 2026, more than seven years after Avengers: Endgame. Anthony and Joe Russo are directing, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU in a new role as Doctor Doom.
Its enormous cast pulls together characters from several corners of Marvel history. Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), and Ian McKellen (Magneto) are among those confirmed to appear.
Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), and Letitia Wright (Shuri) are also part of the ensemble.
Production has also continued deep into 2026. Principal photography wrapped in September 2025, but Marvel had already planned a substantial amount of additional filming as work continued on one of the studio’s biggest releases in years.
Now, with December getting closer, new theater listings show that the movie’s rollout is no longer quite as straightforward as its advertised release date suggests.
Marvel Has Spent Months Finishing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Avengers: Doomsday has already undergone one major change to its release plans.
Disney originally scheduled the film for May 1, 2026. In May 2025, the studio delayed it by more than seven months to December 18, while Avengers: Secret Wars moved from May 2027 to December 17, 2027.
December 18 has remained Marvel’s official date ever since.
The extended schedule gave Marvel more time to complete a movie built around one of the largest casts in MCU history.
The film is expected to unite the Avengers with the Fantastic Four and returning characters from Fox’s X-Men movies, while also introducing Downey’s Doctor Doom as the major threat heading into Secret Wars.
Additional filming has continued close to release.
Winston Duke, who returns as M’Baku, recently confirmed that work was still underway.
“We just wrapped and are doing some additional photography for Avengers: Doomsday.”
David Harbour has also returned for further filming as Red Guardian after reprising the character in Thunderbolts.
The continued work had been expected.
Joe Russo said in June that he and Anthony Russo anticipated working on the movie until shortly before release.
“We are doing some work still on Doomsday and we’ll be until, probably, they rip it out of our hands in November … We’re in the middle of what we would call pre-production on Secret Wars.”
That leaves the Russos handling the final stages of Doomsday – which apparently requires a massive edit to its runtime before its premiere – while simultaneously preparing its sequel.
For Marvel, the two films are set to close out the Multiverse Saga and bring together characters who, until recently, existed in separate corners of the franchise.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Will Start Playing Before December 18
Marvel is still publicly promoting December 18, 2026, as the official release date for Avengers: Doomsday.
However, some movie theaters are now listing screenings beginning one day earlier, on Thursday, December 17.
That means fans will be able to see the new Avengers movie before its advertised Friday opening through preview screenings.
Thursday previews are standard for major Hollywood releases. Studios commonly continue to market a Friday release date even when the first public screenings begin the previous afternoon or evening.
For audiences, however, December 17 effectively becomes the first day Avengers: Doomsday can be watched in theaters.
The listings do not indicate that Disney has formally moved the movie away from December 18.
Instead, they expand the opening rollout by introducing preview screenings before the official release date.
That distinction is especially important after the movie’s earlier seven-month delay.
Unlike the move from May to December, the latest change does not give Marvel more production time or push audiences further away from the film.
The first screenings are now expected to begin before the date Marvel continues to display across its promotional material.
The timing also means spoilers could begin circulating earlier than some fans expect, particularly given the number of returning Marvel characters involved.
Chris Evans is also returning as Steve Rogers, while Channing Tatum will reprise Gambit. Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Lewis Pullman (Bob Reynolds), and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) are also part of the cast.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) are also confirmed to appear.
Whatever happens in Doomsday will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, currently scheduled for December 17, 2027.
