Cast Member Previews Underway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Ahead of September 14

Disney follows a sequence before an attraction opens, and park watchers know it cold.

Walls come down. Signage goes up. Landscaping shows up overnight. Then, the cast members start walking inside.

That last step is the one that counts. Cast previews are not marketing. They are an operational necessity. Before an attraction handles thousands of guests a day, the people running it have to actually run it.

Which makes this week’s news at Disney’s Hollywood Studios matter more than it sounds.

Cast member previews for The Magic of Disney Animation have begun.

The attraction opens September 14, nine days out. Cast members have been spotted heading into the reimagined experience inside the Walt Disney Studios Lot.

Where Things Stand

Cast members are entering the attraction ahead of the September 14 debut.

The construction walls are already down, and Imagineering has been adding finishing touches throughout the courtyard for months.

What is unclear: which cast members qualify for previews, and how long the preview window runs. Disney has not said. Both details usually stay internal, so the silence is normal.

Why This Cast Member Preview Matters

Cast previews exist for a practical reason.

Cast members have to learn the flow before guests arrive. Walking the queue. Working load points. Testing timing. Running the show. Finding the problems that only appear when real people move through a space.

And here, that is harder than a typical ride.

This is not one attraction. It is four experiences under one roof, each with different operational demands:

  • Olaf Draws is a timed class built around a new Audio-Animatronic
  • Off the Page spreads character meets across six themed departments
  • Drawn to Wonderland is a play area, meaning supervision and crowd management instead of a queue
  • The Once Upon A Studio Theater runs on a show length and seating cycle

Getting guests to move between all four without bottlenecking is precisely what previews are for.

Soft Opening or Not?

The question every local is asking.

Disney has not announced a public soft opening before September 14.

Cast previews often precede soft openings. Not always. And Disney never commits in advance. Soft openings are typically unannounced, arrive with no warning, and can end as fast as they start.

What is fair to say: cast previews usually mean an attraction is closed. Whether Disney opens the doors early is a separate call, made based on how previews go.

How This Space Got Here

The Magic of Disney Animation is part of the larger conversion of Animation Courtyard into the Walt Disney Studios Lot.

Animation Courtyard closed September 2025. The reimagined courtyard reopened to guests in May 2026 while work continued inside the attraction.

That gap is unusual. Guests have had the courtyard for roughly three and a half months while the attraction has remained walled off, which is why additions to the statue and finishing touches out there kept surfacing all summer.

The Roy E. Disney Animation Building has been holding the attraction. September 14 opens it.

What Is Inside

Disney has previewed several experiences:

Drawn to Wonderland, an indoor play area for the youngest guests, is inspired by Mary Blair’s original concept art for Alice in Wonderland.

Off the Page, character greetings are organized across six animation studio departments, including Story, Layout, Hand-Drawn Animation, Computer Animation, Lighting, and Effects.

Olaf Draws, an animation class with a brand-new Olaf Audio-Animatronic and original dialogue recorded by Josh Gad.

The Once Upon A Studio Theater, presenting the Emmy-winning short, is built around the attraction, with enhanced effects placing guests inside the story.

Next Few Days After Cast Member Previews

More of the same, realistically.

Expect continued finishing work in the courtyard, possibly more character statues, and previews running until Disney is satisfied.

Watch for a soft opening. If it happens, expect it to be brief, unannounced, and mobbed within twenty minutes of word getting out.

Either way, after nearly a year behind walls, the last major Hollywood Studios opening of 2026 is nine days away.
