Disney’s Lightning McQueen Just Got His Biggest Racing Gig Yet!

Lightning McQueen is taking his biggest real-world racing trip yet.

The star of Pixar’s Cars will be at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy, from September 4–6. But this is more than a quick appearance in a merchandise area. McQueen has been given an official job for the weekend, along with a new design created for Disney’s partnership with Formula 1.

The timing could hardly be better. Cars is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, while September 5 is Lightning McQueen Day. Both happen during one of Formula 1’s most important race weekends.

From Radiator Springs to Monza

McQueen’s fictional career has taken him through the Piston Cup, the World Grand Prix, and the Florida 500. Now, for once, he is leaving those fictional tracks behind.

He will serve as the official support vehicle during the Italian Grand Prix. That gives the character a genuine presence throughout the weekend instead of simply putting him somewhere for fans to take pictures.

His new appearance is part of Disney and Formula 1’s ongoing “Fuel the Magic” campaign. McQueen’s familiar red-and-yellow Rust-eze design is already one of animation’s most recognizable racing liveries, so seeing him in a different look is a notable change.

And there is even a story reason for his trip to Italy.

Francesco Bernoulli Sent the Invitation

Fans of Cars 2 will recognize the connection immediately.

McQueen has been invited to Monza by Francesco Bernoulli, the Italian open-wheel racer who competed against him during the World Grand Prix. Bernoulli was one of McQueen’s biggest rivals in the movie, making him a surprisingly fitting character to bring McQueen to Italy.

It is a small detail, but it gives the crossover more personality than a typical promotional appearance.

The Safety Car Gets a Cars Makeover

McQueen is not the only thing getting a new look.

The Mercedes-AMG Official FIA Safety Car will receive a special Cars-inspired makeover for the Italian Grand Prix. It will debut exclusively during the race weekend.

That is a particularly big deal because the safety car plays an active role in Formula 1. When it is deployed, it leads the field and appears on the worldwide broadcast. In other words, millions of viewers who may have no connection to Disney will get a look at the crossover.

A New Collection and More Cars

There will also be a first-ever Cars x Formula 1 collection available at Monza. Some products will later be sold through the Disney Store and the Formula 1 Official Online Store.

Fans visiting the circuit will find more Cars-themed activities, too. Mattel will have an activation inspired by Radiator Springs, continuing its long-running relationship with the Cars franchise and its die-cast vehicles.

A special screening of Cars is also planned during the weekend as part of the movie’s 20th-anniversary celebration.

The whole event essentially turns Monza into a meeting point for two very different racing worlds.

Why the Crossover Works

Disney and Formula 1 have been building their partnership around the idea of bringing racing to a broader, younger audience. The Cars franchise is a natural fit.

Formula 1 has attracted a much larger family and younger audience in recent years, while Cars introduced an entire generation to the idea of racing through an animated world.

Putting Lightning McQueen at Monza brings those audiences together in a way that feels unusually natural.

After two decades of fictional races, theme-park appearances, and movie adventures, McQueen is finally getting a real Formula 1 weekend.

And for a character who has spent his entire life saying he is a race car, becoming part of the Italian Grand Prix is about as appropriate as it gets.
