Disney California Adventure Attraction Covered in Scaffolding as Major Renovation Begins
Guests walking through Disney California Adventure may barely recognize the exterior of one familiar attraction right now.
A major construction setup has spread around the building, with walls, scaffolding, and black scrims hiding most of what visitors normally see. The work has expanded considerably compared to just a couple of weeks ago, making this one of the more noticeable refurbishment projects currently visible in the park.
Despite appearances, guests shouldn’t assume the attraction is closed. Disney has kept the ride running while crews work outside.
The Little Mermaid Ride Is Hidden Behind the Construction
The attraction at the center of the work is The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure in Paradise Gardens Park.
The family-friendly dark ride takes guests through Ariel’s story as they ride colorful clamshell vehicles. Scenes feature Ariel, Sebastian, Ursula, Prince Eric, and other characters inspired by Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid (1989).
The attraction offers a much slower experience than many of Disney California Adventure’s thrill rides, making it an option for families with younger children. Guests can follow Ariel’s journey under the sea while encountering familiar characters, colorful scenes, and music from the animated story.
Its elaborate exterior also gives the attraction a noticeable presence within this section of the park. The large building and its themed details have become a familiar sight for guests making their way through Paradise Gardens Park.
Visitors won’t see much of that exterior right now, though.
As the refurbishment has progressed, the construction area surrounding the building has grown considerably.

Construction Has Expanded Around the Attraction
Only a couple of weeks ago, the work looked much smaller.
Construction walls and scrims initially appeared near the attraction’s entrance and along its right side. Now, guests will find construction barriers around nearly the entire building.
Scaffolding rises behind the walls, while large black scrims hide much of the themed exterior. From several viewpoints, guests can see very little of the actual building.
Disney hasn’t completely hidden every recognizable feature. King Triton’s statue remains visible above the black coverings, giving guests a glimpse of the attraction behind the construction.
The work also extends behind the nearby merchandise kiosk, showing just how much of the exterior is currently involved.
Fortunately, Disney has left openings in the construction walls so guests can reach the attraction. Seashell-shaped signs direct visitors toward the entrance, helping them navigate an area that currently looks very different.

Black Scrims Could Eventually Look Different
For now, black coverings dominate the exterior.
If the project continues for a longer period, however, Disney could eventually replace them with more decorative coverings. Themed scrims can replicate the general appearance of a building, making construction areas blend more naturally into their surroundings.
There is no confirmation that Disney plans to make that change at The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.
For now, guests should expect to encounter the black scrims, construction walls, and scaffolding when walking past the attraction.
Even with that construction dominating the view, the project has not stopped visitors from heading under the sea.

Guests Can Still Ride The Little Mermaid
The size of the construction area could easily give visitors the wrong impression about the attraction’s status.
The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure remains open and operational during the exterior refurbishment.
Guests can walk through the designated openings in the construction walls, follow the directional signs, and enter the ride normally. The construction primarily changes what visitors see outside rather than preventing them from experiencing the attraction.
That is especially important for families planning their Disney California Adventure day. They do not need to remove The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure from their plans simply because the building looks like a major construction zone.
The biggest difference is the view. Anyone hoping to photograph the attraction’s detailed exterior will find much of it hidden for now.

Disney California Adventure Guests Should Expect a Different View
There is no confirmed timeline in the article for how long the exterior will remain covered.
Until the work progresses further, visitors should expect to see one of Paradise Gardens Park’s familiar buildings largely obscured by construction equipment.
The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure may not look the same from the walkway, but the experience waiting behind those walls remains available.
For guests, that means navigating a few construction barriers and following the seashell signs before joining Ariel, Sebastian, and the other familiar characters inside.
