Disney has retired plenty of familiar experiences over the years, but occasionally, one finds its way back into the conversation long after the final showing.
That’s happening again ahead of D23.
Nearly 11 years after an EPCOT favorite ended its second run, Disney is putting it back in front of fans. There’s no announced theme park comeback, but with a major anniversary approaching, the timing is bound to raise questions about whether Disney could have more planned.
Disney World Has Lost Several Familiar Attractions
Disney World has changed considerably in just the past few years. Several attractions that once seemed like permanent parts of their parks have closed as Disney moves forward with new projects.
- Splash Mountain (2023) – Magic Kingdom’s version closed in January 2023. Disney transformed the attraction into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which opened in June 2024.
- Muppet*Vision 3D (2025) – The longtime Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction closed in June 2025. Disney is now developing the Monsters, Inc.-themed Monstropolis in the surrounding area.
- Tom Sawyer Island (2025) – Disney permanently closed the Magic Kingdom area in July 2025 alongside the Rivers of America. Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed expansion, is taking over the area.
- Liberty Square Riverboat (2025) – The Liberty Belle also ended its run as Disney closed the Rivers of America and prepared the area for Piston Peak.
While those experiences are now part of Disney World history, another former attraction is getting some unexpected attention.
A 40-Year-Old Experience Is Back in the Spotlight
Captain EO debuted at EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination pavilion on September 12, 1986.
The 3D science-fiction musical starred Michael Jackson as Captain EO. Francis Ford Coppola directed the production, while George Lucas served as executive producer.
The ambitious film combined music with elaborate effects and colorful characters. Jackson also performed songs during the adventure, including “We Are Here to Change the World.”
Captain EO’s original EPCOT run ended in 1994.
Disney eventually gave it another chance. Following Jackson’s death in 2009, Captain EO returned to EPCOT in July 2010. That second run continued until December 2015.
Now, almost 11 years later, Captain EO is resurfacing at a particularly interesting time.
Teasy Merchandise Is Coming to D23
D23 runs from August 14 through August 16, and Captain EO is represented among Disney’s initial merchandise offerings.
Disney has created an interactive Fuzzball plush inspired by the small flying character from Captain EO (1986). The plush features authentic sounds and will initially be available to guests attending D23.
After the event, Disney plans to make the item available to more fans through the Disney Store online.
Of course, Disney releasing nostalgic merchandise isn’t proof that Captain EO is returning to EPCOT.
But there’s another piece of this story that makes the timing hard to ignore.
Suspicious Timing
September 12 will mark exactly 40 years since Captain EO made its EPCOT debut.
At the same time, Michael Jackson is receiving renewed attention following Michael (2026), the biographical movie starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson. The film opened theatrically in April and recently arrived on Starz.
That combination creates an interesting possibility.
Disney has used temporary changes to attractions for major celebrations before. Soarin’ Across America arrived at EPCOT in May 2026 as part of the company’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
Could Captain EO receive its own temporary anniversary engagement?
Disney hasn’t announced one, and there’s currently no confirmation that the film will return to EPCOT. The Fuzzball merchandise could simply give nostalgic fans something special for the anniversary.
For now, a park comeback remains speculation.
D23 Could Bring Other Disney Parks News
Captain EO isn’t the only reason theme park fans will watch D23 closely.
Disney currently has several major projects underway at Walt Disney World. Monstropolis is taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, while Magic Kingdom has Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land in development. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is also undergoing its Tropical Americas transformation.
Elsewhere, Disney Adventure World debuted at Disneyland Paris in March alongside World of Frozen. Construction continues on a future Lion King area featuring a major water attraction.
Tokyo Disneyland is also preparing for its next-generation Space Mountain project.
Disney hasn’t promised specific announcements about these projects at D23. Still, fans could potentially receive updates, while other attraction closures, refurbishments, replacements, or new projects remain possibilities.
Could Captain EO Really Return?
For now, Captain EO’s confirmed comeback extends only to renewed attention and merchandise.
That’s still noteworthy.
Disney is revisiting the former EPCOT experience nearly 11 years after its final run and just weeks before its 40th anniversary.
Perhaps Fuzzball is simply a nostalgic anniversary release. Or maybe Disney has another surprise planned.
Until Disney makes an announcement, there’s no reason to assume Captain EO is returning.
But after more than a decade away, it’s back in the conversation at exactly the right time to make fans wonder.
