Classic Ride Updates: Disney Imagineers Could Finally Overhaul Spaceship Earth’s Tech

Walt Disney World fans have spent the last several years watching new attractions, new lands, and major construction projects reshape the resort. From large-scale expansions to updated entertainment offerings, Disney has focused heavily on the future.

But while much of the attention has focused on what’s new, another trend is emerging. Disney appears increasingly interested in updating some of its oldest attractions rather than simply replacing them.

That shift has become much more noticeable following a major announcement involving one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved classics. And if Disney follows a similar strategy elsewhere, EPCOT’s most recognizable attraction could eventually find itself on the same path.

Carousel of Progress Is Getting a Major Refresh

Disney recently confirmed that Carousel of Progress will close on July 6, 2026, for a substantial reimagining.

The attraction will continue telling the story of the same family, but Disney plans to expand that journey into additional decades and newer technological eras. Instead of a simple refurbishment, the project aims to modernize the attraction while preserving the elements that have made it a fan favorite for generations.

One of the most talked-about additions is a new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure that will appear in the introductory scene.

For longtime Disney fans, the announcement represents something larger than a standard attraction update. It suggests Disney sees value in preserving classic experiences while finding new ways to keep them relevant.

That philosophy could have implications well beyond Tomorrowland.

Spaceship Earth Faces a Similar Challenge

At EPCOT, few attractions carry as much importance as Spaceship Earth.

Located inside the park’s iconic geodesic sphere, the attraction traces the history of communication from ancient civilizations through the rise of modern technology. It remains one of the most recognizable rides anywhere at Walt Disney World and continues to embody many of the ideas that helped define EPCOT from the beginning.

The attraction’s message still resonates with guests: human progress, innovation, and the desire to connect remain timeless themes.

However, the attraction also faces a unique challenge. Because it focuses on communication technology, it naturally ages faster than many other Disney attractions.

Technology Has Moved Faster Than the Ride

When Spaceship Earth was created, many of its scenes reflected cutting-edge ideas and technology.

Today, the world looks very different.

Smartphones have replaced many traditional forms of communication. Social media connects billions of people instantly. Artificial intelligence continues to reshape how information is shared and created. Video conferencing, cloud computing, and digital collaboration have become routine parts of everyday life.

Yet many of these developments receive little attention within the attraction itself.

The ride still tells its larger story, but some of its later scenes no longer feel as futuristic as they once did. And for an attraction built around technological advancement, that creates an obvious challenge.

An update could allow Disney to incorporate modern storytelling tools while refreshing the attraction’s vision of the future. Enhanced projections, upgraded ride systems, improved lighting effects, and newer Audio-Animatronics could all help bring that story into the present day.

A Blueprint for Future Updates?

Carousel of Progress may offer a clue about how Disney plans to handle aging attractions in the future.

Rather than removing classics entirely, Disney appears willing to invest in thoughtful modernizations that preserve an attraction’s identity while updating its presentation.

Spaceship Earth fits that model almost perfectly.

Both attractions focus on innovation. Both celebrate technological progress. And both must continually adapt as the real world changes around them.

While Disney has not announced any plans for Spaceship Earth, the similarities between the two attractions make the comparison difficult to ignore.

More EPCOT Classics Could Benefit

If Disney continues modernizing older attractions, other EPCOT favorites could eventually enter the conversation as well.

Journey Into Imagination With Figment remains one of the park’s most beloved experiences, but many fans would welcome upgraded effects and newer technology.

Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros could also benefit from modern animatronics and refreshed visuals.

Disney has already demonstrated how much Audio-Animatronic technology has improved in recent years. Attractions like Frozen Ever After showcase smoother movements, more expressive faces, and greater realism than earlier generations of figures.

Those advancements could help preserve classic attractions while giving them a fresh layer of energy.

Looking Ahead

Disney’s latest decisions suggest the company is thinking carefully about how its classic attractions fit into the future of its parks.

Carousel of Progress is about to receive one of its biggest updates in decades. If the project succeeds, it could influence how Disney approaches other beloved attractions moving forward.

Spaceship Earth remains one of EPCOT’s defining experiences. As technology continues evolving, the attraction may eventually need to evolve with it.

For now, no overhaul has been announced. But Disney’s growing willingness to modernize its classics makes the idea feel more realistic than ever.
