Disney World May Finally Change Animal Kingdom’s Controversial Closing Time

For years, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has stood apart from the rest of Walt Disney World in more ways than one. It’s the only park built around live animals, conservation, and sprawling nature trails, and because of that, it has always followed a different schedule than its sister parks. But with major expansion plans underway, guests are beginning to wonder whether one of the park’s most frustrating traditions could finally be on the way out.

While new attractions have dominated recent headlines, they may also bring an unexpected benefit. As Animal Kingdom grows, Disney could have a real opportunity to rethink the park’s operating hours and give guests the later evenings they’ve wanted for years.

Animal Kingdom Has Always Closed Earlier Than the Other Parks

Visitors planning a Walt Disney World vacation quickly notice that Animal Kingdom doesn’t stay open as late as Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Depending on the season, the park often closes between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., with 8:30 p.m. representing one of its later scheduled closing times. During the summer, guests sometimes leave while the sun is still high enough to make the park feel like the day ended early.

Unlike Disney’s other parks, Animal Kingdom has unique operational responsibilities. Hundreds of animals call the park home, and dedicated care teams work behind the scenes to manage feeding schedules, habitat maintenance, veterinary care, and overnight routines.

Those responsibilities help explain why the park operates differently, even if guests have questioned the schedule for years.

Nighttime Is One of the Park’s Biggest Missed Opportunities

The conversation about Animal Kingdom’s hours became even louder after Pandora – The World of Avatar debuted in 2017.

Disney designed the entire land to look dramatically different after sunset. Glowing pathways, illuminated plants, and colorful lighting create an atmosphere that many guests consider one of the most beautiful nighttime experiences anywhere at Walt Disney World.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets to enjoy it.

Because Animal Kingdom frequently closes before darkness fully settles in, plenty of visitors never experience Pandora at its most impressive. Others only catch a brief glimpse before heading toward the exit.

Guests have also pointed out that cooler evening temperatures would make attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey even more enjoyable after a long day in Florida’s heat.

Pueblo Esperanza Could Change the Equation

Animal Kingdom is entering another major chapter as Disney transforms the former DinoLand U.S.A. into Pueblo Esperanza.

The new Tropical Americas area will feature attractions inspired by Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones, along with new restaurants, shops, and entertainment offerings. Once complete, the expansion will give guests far more to see and do throughout the day.

That could naturally lead to longer visits.

Adding major attractions typically encourages guests to spend more time inside a park, and Animal Kingdom may eventually need additional operating hours to accommodate those longer itineraries.

Disney will still have to balance guest expectations with the park’s conservation mission, but expanding the park’s offerings could create new opportunities to adjust daily operations without compromising animal care.

Could Later Closing Times Finally Become Reality?

Even if Disney decides to extend Animal Kingdom’s hours, the park probably won’t stay open as late as Magic Kingdom.

Instead, regular closings around 9 p.m. or even 10 p.m. seem like a much more realistic possibility.

An extra hour or two could make a noticeable difference. Families would have additional time to experience attractions, enjoy dinner without watching the clock, and finally explore Pandora after dark without feeling rushed.

Longer operating days might also spread crowds more evenly across the afternoon and evening. Rather than trying to fit everything into a shorter window, guests could take a more relaxed approach and enjoy the park at a slower pace.

Disney Has an Opportunity to Rethink the Guest Experience

Animal Kingdom’s expansion represents more than new attractions and fresh storytelling. It also gives Disney a chance to revisit one of the park’s most common complaints.

Nothing has been announced regarding longer operating hours, and Disney has not committed to changing its current schedule. Still, the timing makes the idea more realistic than it has been in years.

As Pueblo Esperanza brings more experiences to the park and encourages guests to spend additional time exploring, extending evening hours could become a natural next step. If that happens, visitors may finally get the chance to enjoy more of Animal Kingdom after sunset—and experience one of Walt Disney World’s most beautiful parks the way many fans believe it was always meant to be seen.
