Disney is asking fans to trust Imagineering with one of the most historically significant attractions at Walt Disney World.
Carousel of Progress isn’t simply another Magic Kingdom ride receiving a refurbishment. Its history stretches directly back to Walt Disney, making any substantial alteration a much bigger deal for longtime fans.
And substantial changes are exactly what Disney has planned.
The attraction is getting a new timeline, new periods of American history, a completely different look at the future, and an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney himself.
With expectations understandably high, Disney Imagineering has now made its position clear: If you’re going to change something beloved, you need to make it better.
Disney Is Rebuilding the Carousel’s Timeline
Carousel of Progress has always faced a challenge that most Disney attractions don’t.
Eventually, the future becomes the past.
The attraction was designed around the idea of following technological progress across generations. However, its final scene gradually became less of a prediction about tomorrow and more of a look backward at how people once imagined the future.
Disney’s new version will attempt to fix that.
The reimagined show will begin in the 1960s during the space-race era, giving the attraction a new historical starting point.
Guests will then travel forward to Halloween in the 1980s before reaching Y2K and the turn of the millennium.
After revisiting those periods, Carousel of Progress will finally move beyond the present and into an “out-of-this-world” future.
That gives Imagineering a chance to restore one of the attraction’s most important ingredients: imagining what could come next.
Walt Disney Is Coming to Carousel of Progress
The new historical scenes aren’t the only reason this project carries so much weight.
Disney is also adding an Audio-Animatronic Walt Disney.
Carousel of Progress has a history stretching back to the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, where Walt and his team developed the attraction for General Electric.
The attraction eventually moved to Disneyland before finding its permanent home at Walt Disney World.
Decades later, guests can still experience a concept that Walt personally helped bring to life.
That makes Carousel of Progress increasingly unusual in the modern Disney parks, where many older attractions have disappeared or undergone extensive transformations.
Adding Walt directly into the experience could strengthen that historical connection, but it also gives Imagineering another enormous responsibility.
Disney Promises to Handle the Classic Carefully
Imagineer Michael Hundgen recently discussed how the company approaches a project like Carousel of Progress.
“Know that when we touch a classic like Carousel of Progress, our Imagineers take the utmost care in thinking about how we approach that,” Hundgen said.
Rather than dismissing concerns about changing the attraction, Hundgen acknowledged how much Carousel of Progress means to Disney fans.
He also expressed confidence in the Imagineers responsible for its next chapter.
“The team on this project is phenomenal. They care a lot about the legacy of the attraction and plan on infusing some great new optimism into it for future generations to enjoy.”
That reference to optimism feels particularly appropriate for Carousel of Progress.
Walt’s attraction was built around an optimistic view of technological advancement. Each generation discovers new conveniences, and tomorrow always holds another possibility.
The challenge is figuring out how to communicate that same message to guests decades later.
Imagineering Sets a Simple Rule
Hundgen went even further when discussing Disney’s responsibility toward beloved attractions.
“I think we should always be held accountable to a standard that is, ‘if you’re going to touch something that is beloved, then you must leave it better than you found it.'”
That may become the quote fans remember once the attraction reopens.
Leaving Carousel of Progress “better” is also incredibly subjective.
Some guests may consider the new historical scenes exactly what the attraction needs. Others may prefer Disney preserve as much of the existing show as possible.
And there will almost certainly be strong opinions surrounding the Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic.
Disney Has Set Expectations High
Disney is taking a risk whenever it substantially changes something with this much history.
Carousel of Progress has survived for generations because its central idea remains remarkably simple. Technology changes, families change, and the world changes, but people continue looking toward a better tomorrow.
Updating the attraction could help that message connect with another generation.
It could also leave longtime fans wondering whether too much of the attraction they loved disappeared along the way.
Right now, neither side can know exactly how the finished version will feel.
Disney has made its intentions clear, though. Imagineering says it understands the legacy it’s handling, and the team believes any changes to a beloved attraction should ultimately improve it.
That’s a major promise.
When Carousel of Progress finally returns, Disney fans will get to decide whether Imagineering kept it.
