A Disney Junior animated series that only launched last year has come to an end. The news came not from Marvel or Disney, but from one of the people who built the latest version of Iron Man from the ground up.
The Announcement Came From the Creator
On July 18, co-executive producer and story editor James Eason-Garcia confirmed on Instagram that Iron Man and His Awesome Friends had been canceled after a single season. Eason-Garcia, who first pitched the concept in February 2022, shared a heartfelt farewell to the project and everyone who worked on it:
And that’s a wrap! On February 22, 2022, I started writing my pitch for an animated preschool series based on Iron Man. While of course I had high hopes for my ideas, what I couldn’t have planned on was the totally awesome journey I was starting that would last the next four years. I have learned so much, grown even more as a creator and a leader, and found strength in myself I didn’t know I had. Mostly thanks to the amazing creative partners who have been by my side each and every day. The list of people I have to thank would be too long to type out here but everyone knows how much they have mattered to me in helping this series come to life (because I make sure to tell them every chance I get!) In all, we produced eighty 11-minute stories and 20 shorts, telling the adventures of the Iron Friends and the misadventures of their hilarious rogues gallery. We really wanted to create a series that showed kids that no matter what problem you faced, it was only a challenge that was easier to overcome with friends by your side. What I’m most proud of is that we accomplished this on the show itself and behind the scenes. No matter the problems we encountered, I was lucky enough to have a fantastic crew of friends by my side to tackle each and every challenge. That joy, happiness, and camaraderie comes across on each and every frame of animation. And for that, I could not be more grateful. It’s a bittersweet day for sure, but I’m excited to see what new challenges there are to tackle and all the cool people I will get to face them with in the future. There are still plenty of episodes left to be released so fans of the show have much more of this wonderful series left to enjoy. Disney has not publicly addressed the cancellation or confirmed what will happen to the unreleased episodes and additional content that were produced before the show wrapped.
Iron Man and His Awesome Friends premiered on Disney Junior on August 11, 2025, with episodes available on Disney+ the following day. The series centered on younger versions of Tony Stark (Iron Man), Riri Williams (Ironheart), and Amadeus Cho (Iron Hulk), operating out of a beachfront headquarters called Iron Quarter alongside their super pup Gamma, also known as Iron Pup.
The premise put the Iron Friends’ genius minds and superhuman abilities to work solving problems and protecting their city — all while emphasizing friendship and teamwork for its preschool audience. In total, the team produced 80 eleven-minute episodes and 20 shorts before the cancellation.
Tony Stark Isn’t Going Anywhere
The end of Iron Man and His Awesome Friends doesn’t mean the end of Tony Stark in animation for young viewers. Marvel Studios and Disney have already announced Marvel’s Avengers: Mightiest Friends, described as an “evolution” of the canceled series, set to debut on Disney Junior and Disney+ sometime in 2027.
Several creatives from Iron Man and His Awesome Friends are involved in the new show, which will feature child versions of Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Panther, Black Widow, and Thor facing off against iconic Marvel villains. The young Avengers have already crossed over with the cast of Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends, with another Halloween-themed crossover scheduled for this fall.
For fans of the original Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU — not as Iron Man, but in the new role of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, premiering December 18, 2026.
