Disney and ‘Star Wars’ Confirm ‘The Mandalorian’ Series Remake Coming to Streaming
Lucasfilm is returning to one of the Star Wars franchise’s biggest modern success stories.

Following the theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), which struggled to meet Disney’s expectations at the global box office, Lucasfilm has announced LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian (2026), an animated Disney+ special that will revisit the Disney+ series with a comedic twist.
Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu made the jump from streaming to theaters earlier this year in Jon Favreau’s feature film, the first Star Wars movie to reach cinemas since Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The film also introduced new faces to the galaxy, including Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt.
Ahead of the movie’s release, Favreau revealed that a fourth season of The Mandalorian had been planned. However, the decision to develop a theatrical feature meant that storyline—one expected to connect more directly with Grand Admiral Thrawn and the broader New Republic era—was ultimately abandoned. According to Favreau, Disney and Lucasfilm wanted The Mandalorian and Grogu to stand on its own without requiring audiences to have watched all three seasons of the Disney+ series.

Disney positioned The Mandalorian and Grogu as the beginning of Star Wars‘ return to movie theaters after several years away from the big screen.
Instead, the film faced a tougher theatrical landscape than anticipated, with moviegoers gravitating toward lower-budget horror releases rather than the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga. Early projections pointed toward a restrained opening weekend, and the final numbers reflected those expectations.
By the conclusion of its theatrical run, The Mandalorian and Grogu earned just over $340 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $165 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group have now confirmed that LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ on September 2.
The studio says the animated special promises “unexpected laughs and action-packed fun” while retelling “your favorite stories and characters from all three seasons” of The Mandalorian. Like previous LEGO Star Wars productions, the project will reinterpret familiar events with a humorous, condensed approach rather than continue the live-action storyline.
Lucasfilm also unveiled a teaser poster featuring Din Djarin’s first encounter with Grogu, recreated entirely in LEGO form, offering fans an early glimpse at how one of the franchise’s defining moments has been adapted.
Those attending D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Experience will have an opportunity to watch the special before its streaming launch. Lucasfilm has scheduled an exclusive screening for August 15, more than two weeks before the Disney+ premiere. Additional details, including the complete voice cast, runtime, and a full trailer, have yet to be announced.

The announcement arrives as Lucasfilm continues charting its next chapter for theatrical Star Wars.
Although The Mandalorian remains among Disney+’s strongest original series, its move to theaters did not produce the box office performance Disney had hoped would launch a new period of Star Wars films. The results have renewed debate over whether the franchise currently connects more strongly with audiences on streaming than in cinemas.
Even so, Lucasfilm continues developing several theatrical projects, including Dave Filoni’s planned feature and Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter (2027).
Meanwhile, Din Djarin and Grogu’s latest adventure is preparing for its home release. The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on digital platforms on July 21, 2026, before 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions featuring bonus material are released on August 25, 2026.
