Lucasfilm Launches New ‘Star Wars’ Timeline to Finally Move Past The Sequels

One of the greatest strengths of Star Wars: Visions has always been the fact that none of it matters. At least, not officially.

Ever since the anthology series debuted on Disney+ in 2021, Lucasfilm has made it clear that the stories exist outside established continuity, giving creators complete freedom to explore wildly different corners of the galaxy without worrying about canon restrictions.

Ironically, that creative freedom may have produced the most exciting post-sequel story yet.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy remains one of the franchise’s most controversial chapters.

While Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens (2015) was largely well received upon release, enthusiasm quickly began to evaporate following Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017), with Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019) proving hugely divisive.

Years later, the trilogy remains deeply unpopular among large sections of the fanbase, with rumors of Lucasfilm somehow erasing it from continuity continuing to circulate online.

That almost certainly won’t happen. But Lucasfilm has quietly introduced something that comes remarkably close.

A New Star Wars Timeline Is Coming

While the upcoming theatrical release Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will continue the official timeline just five years after The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is charting a completely different future.

Expanding upon the hugely popular “The Ninth Jedi” episode from Star Wars: Visions and its Volume 3 follow-up “Child of Hope,” the new series follows Lah Kara as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order in a distant future where the Sith have once again risen to power.

Director Kenji Kamiyama previously acknowledged the sequel trilogy while speaking to IGN:

“This is the future after Episode IX,” he said. “I wondered, after Episode IX, has the galaxy settled into peace? We all love stories of the Jedi and lightsabers, but what became of the Jedi Knights after the movie series? My story is about that.”

Despite that placement in the timeline, The Ninth Jedi is not believed to be canon.

Instead, it exists entirely separately from the main Star Wars continuity, creating what is effectively an alternate future for the galaxy — one untouched by the baggage of the sequel trilogy.

The newly released trailer shows Lah Kara gathering allies as she prepares to battle a dark side warlord while attempting to restore the Jedi.

For many fans who never connected with Episodes VII through IX, that alone may prove incredibly appealing.

Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi streams on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5.
