The Flaw in Disney’s New Pricing System That Renders Lightning Lane Useless at Animal Kingdom

Let’s be honest about Disney’s Animal Kingdom: it is a gorgeous, immersive park, but it is not a ride-heavy park. It was built around animals, walking trails, and massive theatrical productions. That is exactly why the introduction of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system feels so fundamentally broken here. When you actually break down the cost per ride, buying the Multi Pass at Animal Kingdom simply stops making financial sense, effectively rendering the system obsolete for anyone trying to plan a smart budget.

The core issue is that the park’s undisputed king of attractions, Avatar Flight of Passage, isn’t even included in the Multi Pass tier. If you want to bypass the massive line for that simulator, you have to buy a completely separate Lightning Lane Single Pass. So, what exactly are you paying for if you buy the Multi Pass as well?

You are paying to skip the lines on a very short list of attractions: Kilimanjaro Safaris, Naʻvi River Journey, Expedition Everest, and Kali River Rapids. That’s essentially it. The rest of the Multi Pass options are rounded out by stage shows like the Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo. These shows are phenomenal, but they take place in massive, high-capacity theaters. You almost never need a special pass to get a seat; you just need to show up fifteen minutes before the doors open.

When you strip away the shows, you’re paying a hefty daily fee to skip lines on maybe three or four actual rides. If you utilize a basic theme park strategy—like arriving early for “rope drop” or staying late into the afternoon when the crowds naturally thin out—you can easily experience all of these rides via the regular standby lines without spending an extra dime. Expedition Everest even offers a free Single Rider line that moves incredibly fast.

Ultimately, the smartest financial move is to buy the à la carte Single Pass for Flight of Passage to secure your ride on the park’s biggest attraction, and completely ignore the Multi Pass. Spending money on both just doesn’t offer enough return on your investment, making the Multi Pass an easy pass to skip.
