Disney World Just Moved One Step Closer to Opening Monsters Inc. Land

Every construction update brings Disney’s biggest upcoming Hollywood Studios expansion a little closer to reality.

While Disney still hasn’t announced when Monsters Inc. Land will officially welcome guests, the company has taken another significant step behind the scenes. A newly filed construction permit confirms that work continues to accelerate on one of the land’s centerpiece experiences, offering fans another reason to believe Monstropolis is steadily taking shape.

An opening may still be years away, but Disney isn’t slowing down.

Another Piece of the Puzzle Falls Into Place

Disney has remained largely silent about Monsters Inc. Land since announcing the ambitious expansion. Aside from confirming a suspended coaster based on the famous door vault sequence from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. (2001), the company has revealed very little about the rest of the project.

Construction, however, tells a different story.

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new Notice of Commencement for electrical work inside the future Glob Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The permit names Elite A/V Systems as the contractor, adding yet another company to the growing list of firms helping bring Monstropolis to life.

Although guests won’t notice electrical work from the outside, permits like this often mark an important phase of development. Once crews begin installing entertainment systems, lighting infrastructure, and show technology, projects typically start moving beyond basic construction and into the technical stages that eventually prepare attractions for operation.

The Future of the Former MuppetVision Theater

The Glob Theater occupies one of the most recognizable buildings in the park.

After MuppetVision 3D permanently closed, Disney confirmed that the theater would remain as part of Monsters Inc. Land. Instead of demolishing the building, Imagineering is giving it an entirely new identity.

What that identity actually looks like remains a mystery.

Disney has not announced what type of attraction or show will debut inside the theater. Fans have speculated about everything from a Broadway-style production to an interactive experience featuring Mike Wazowski and Sulley, but Disney hasn’t confirmed any details.

Meanwhile, work continues at a steady pace.

Several previous permits have covered custom fabrication, scenic elements, stage work, exhibit installation, and audio-visual systems. Outside the building, scaffolding continues covering portions of the exterior as crews reshape it to fit the streets of Monstropolis.

Taken together, the permits show that Disney is making meaningful progress even without releasing frequent updates.

More Than Just a New Theater

The Glob Theater is only one part of a much larger transformation.

The true headliner will be Disney’s suspended door coaster, a first-of-its-kind attraction that recreates one of Pixar’s most memorable movie moments. Throughout 2026, guests have watched massive show buildings rise while coaster track has steadily arrived behind construction walls.

The entire area surrounding the former Grand Avenue continues changing as Disney prepares one of the largest additions Disney’s Hollywood Studios has seen in years.

Once complete, Monsters Inc. Land will dramatically reshape this section of the park while introducing an entirely new environment inspired by the beloved Pixar franchise.

Why Fans May Be Waiting a Little Longer

As exciting as the latest permit may be, it also serves as a reminder that plenty of work remains.

Disney still hasn’t announced an opening date, and the amount of ongoing construction suggests the company has a long road ahead before welcoming guests.

Most observers now expect Monsters Inc. Land to open sometime in 2028 or 2029. That estimate reflects the scale of the project, which includes the massive coaster, the complete reimagining of existing buildings, new themed streets, backstage infrastructure, and the extensive work still taking place throughout the construction site.

Disney also continues building several other major projects across Walt Disney World, making a staggered rollout of new lands the most likely strategy over the next several years.

The Next Big Reveal Could Be Around the Corner

Although Disney hasn’t shared many official updates recently, fans may not have to wait much longer for new information.

D23 Expo is approaching, and Disney frequently uses the event to showcase its largest parks projects. With construction becoming more visible and permits continuing to arrive, many expect the company to finally reveal additional details about Monsters Inc. Land and perhaps even explain what guests will experience inside the mysterious Glob Theater.

Until then, every permit offers another glimpse into the project’s steady progress.

The newest filing may not include concept art or an opening date, but it confirms one important fact. Disney has officially moved one step closer to opening Monsters Inc. Land, and while guests may still have several years to wait before entering Monstropolis, the destination is becoming more real with every passing month.
