Disney’s Animal Kingdom Has a New Star, and His Story Hits Different

A fresh presence has arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and for returning visitors, this development is sure to resonate more deeply. Disney has officially introduced Bakari, a 21-year-old male western lowland gorilla, as the new silverback of the troop located at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

Bakari’s introduction is particularly significant for those familiar with the park’s history, as he steps into this important role following the passing of the beloved previous silverback. The dynamics of the troop and guests’ experience at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail will undoubtedly be influenced by Bakari’s unique personality and leadership. As he acclimates to his new environment, visitors can look forward to observing how he interacts with the other gorillas and adapts to his responsibilities. This transition not only symbolizes a new chapter for the troop but also highlights the ongoing efforts of Animal Kingdom to provide an engaging and educational experience for guests.

A Little Animal Kingdom Background First

Last September, Animal Kingdom lost Gino, the gorilla who had been leading the troop for almost 30 years. He was 44 years old, had fathered 14 offspring, and honestly felt like a fixture of the park since it opened. Disney doesn’t usually put out statements when an animal passes away, but they made an exception for Gino, which says a lot about how much he meant to the park.

Guests used to slow down just to watch him with his troop, whether he was resting in the sun or interacting with younger gorillas. A lot of people who grew up visiting Animal Kingdom have memories tied to watching him over the years, so his passing genuinely felt like losing a familiar face.

Now Meet Bakari

Bakari arrived from the Saint Louis Zoo, which announced the move on June 25. He was actually born at Brookfield Zoo back in 2005, then moved to Saint Louis in 2011, where he lived in a bachelor troop, basically a group that helps prepare young male gorillas to eventually lead their own family group.

That kind of setup mirrors how gorillas actually live in the wild, where young males stick together until they’re ready to join a breeding troop of their own.

His move to Florida is part of something bigger too. It’s tied to a breeding recommendation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan, which works to keep a genetically healthy population of this gorilla subspecies across accredited zoos. Western lowland gorillas are actually the most common gorilla subspecies, but they’re still critically endangered, so programs like this one are a pretty big deal for the species overall.

What This Means for Your Next Visit to Animal Kingdom

If you’re heading to Animal Kingdom soon, Bakari is now out on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, settling into his new role. Disney’s been clear that there’s no guarantee you’ll spot him on any given visit since it really depends on the day, but it’s worth keeping an eye out as he gets used to leading his new troop.

For longtime fans who remember Gino, watching Bakari step into this role probably feels pretty meaningful. No one’s expecting him to replace nearly 30 years of history overnight, but his arrival means the troop has a leader again, and it ties directly back into the same conservation work that made Gino’s legacy so important in the first place.

It’s a nice reminder that Animal Kingdom isn’t just about rides and shows. Sometimes the most memorable parts of a visit happen in those quiet moments along the trail, watching real animals just being themselves.
