New ‘Batman’ Actor Speaks Out on Role in James Gunn’s DC Universe

The new DC Universe is entering a busy stretch.

Following last year’s Superman (2025), DC Studios is now preparing to release Supergirl (2026), directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.

Meanwhile, development continues on Man of Tomorrow (2027), which will bring back David Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. It’s being written and directed by DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn, who also helmed last year’s Man of Steel reboot.

Meanwhile, fans are still waiting for major updates on The Brave and the Bold, the Batman reboot that will introduce the DCU’s version of the Caped Crusader.

Yet another project has quietly emerged as one of the most closely watched films on the slate.

The DCU’s First Batman Movie Is Coming This Year

Clayface (2026) is set to bring one of Batman’s most recognizable villains to the big screen in a very different way. Rather than a traditional comic-book adventure, the film has been described as a “body-horror” story centered on struggling Gotham City actor Matt Hagen.

Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hagen, whose life is transformed after a horrifying incident turns him into the infamous shape-shifting villain.

DC recently offered fans their first official look at the character through a series of in-universe magazine covers, before later teasing his transformation in the film’s official debut trailer.

The actor recently discussed the project during an interview with Club Ciné (via Comicbookmovie.com), where he highlighted the work of writer Mike Flanagan and screenwriter Hossein Amini.

“I’ve been a huge Mike Flanagan fan for as long as I’ve been watching film and TV,” Harries said, adding, “Hossein Amini has built on what was a foundational script that works as a complete standalone within an extended world.”

He later described the movie as “meta” because of its focus on an actor navigating a dramatic personal transformation. According to Harries, however, the story functions as a complete “standalone” film despite existing within James Gunn’s larger DCU continuity.

Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, and David Dencik. The film is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026.
