June 9 Could Restore a Missing Piece of Toon Lagoon at Islands of Adventure

Guests visiting Islands of Adventure this summer are about to see one of Toon Lagoon’s biggest attractions return to action.

After spending weeks under refurbishment, Me Ship, The Olive is expected to reopen on June 9, ending a temporary closure that left a noticeable gap inside the Popeye-themed section of the park. While the attraction may not generate the same attention as a new roller coaster or major land expansion, its return is still significant for many visitors.

The massive play structure has been a staple of Islands of Adventure since opening day, and its reopening arrives at a time when many fans are paying closer attention to the future of Universal’s original attractions.

More Than Just a Playground

At first glance, Me Ship, The Olive might look like a simple children’s playground. In reality, it serves several important purposes inside Toon Lagoon.

The attraction gives younger guests a place to explore while providing families with an alternative to the area’s water rides. It also acts as a visual centerpiece for the land, helping bring the world of Popeye to life through oversized comic-style architecture and interactive experiences.

Because thousands of guests use the attraction throughout the year, periodic refurbishments are necessary to maintain its appearance and overall condition.

That’s exactly what Universal has been doing during the latest closure.

The End of Construction Is Near

Construction walls have surrounded portions of the attraction for weeks, making it clear that crews were carrying out extensive work throughout the area.

As June 9 approaches, however, signs suggest the project is wrapping up. Guests have reported seeing significant progress, with much of the attraction looking ready for reopening.

Although Universal has not released detailed information about every update made during the closure, the goal appears to be restoring and refreshing a key part of Toon Lagoon ahead of the busy summer season.

That timing is important, especially as Universal continues welcoming large crowds across all of its parks.

An Original Islands of Adventure Icon

Toon Lagoon remains one of the few opening-day lands that still largely reflects its original vision.

While other areas throughout Universal Orlando have evolved dramatically over the years, Toon Lagoon continues celebrating classic comic strip characters in a way that feels increasingly rare in today’s theme park industry.

Me Ship, The Olive plays a major role in that identity.

Its return may not be as flashy as a brand-new attraction announcement, but it serves as another reminder that Universal still values many of the experiences that helped make Islands of Adventure a fan favorite.

When June 9 arrives, guests will once again be able to climb aboard one of Toon Lagoon’s most recognizable attractions and enjoy a refreshed version of a park classic.
