Mark Hamill Is Officially Out as Beloved Character, Different Actor Promises To Take on Role in Any New Project

Mark Hamill’s legacy as Luke Skywalker remains one of the most defining performances in cinematic history.

From his debut in Star Wars (1977) through The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), Hamill helped shape one of the most influential characters in pop culture.

Decades later, he returned for the sequel trilogy — The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) — before appearing again in The Mandalorian Season 2 (2020) and The Book of Boba Fett (2021) through de-aging technology.

Since those appearances, Hamill has increasingly suggested that his time as Luke may be over. Speaking to ComicBook.com in 2025, he said Lucasfilm should focus on “new characters,” adding, “I had my time.”

That statement has fueled ongoing debate among fans about whether Hamill could ever return again — especially as Star Wars continues to expand under new creative leadership.

While Luke Skywalker’s future remains uncertain, Hamill’s career has taken him far beyond the galaxy far, far away. He is also widely recognized as one of the most prolific voice actors in the industry, most notably for his long-running portrayal of The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and numerous related projects.

Interestingly, Hamill has also crossed into horror in an unexpected way. In 2019, he voiced Chucky in MGM’s Child’s Play reboot, a standalone reimagining that separated itself entirely from the original franchise continuity.

However, the character of Chucky is largely associated with actor Brad Dourif, who originated the role in Child’s Play (1988) and continued through Child’s Play 2 (1990), Child’s Play 3 (1991), Bride of Chucky (1998), Seed of Chucky (2004), Curse of Chucky (2013), Cult of Chucky (2017), and the television series Chucky (2021–2024).

At a recent appearance at Spooky Empire in Orlando, Florida (via CBR.com), Dourif was asked whether he planned to “say goodbye” to the role. “Yeah, nobody’s doing Chucky but me,” he responded, drawing a strong reaction from the audience.

While there are no plans for a follow-up to the 2019 film, Dourif’s comments suggest that he remains protective over the role of Chucky, whether that’s in the main timeline of films and TV shows, or in a reboot capacity.

For now, while speculation continues about whether Hamill could ever return as Luke Skywalker, both actors remain firmly tied to the characters that defined their careers — one in a galaxy far, far away, the other in the darkest corners of horror.

Would you like to see Mark Hamill return to voice Chucky in another film? Or would you rather see him stick to Luke Skywalker while Brad Dourif continues to voice the killer doll? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
