Jim Carrey’s Iconic Green Villain Returns in Brand-New Installment
Jim Carrey is known for many roles, some of them mean, some of them green. But now, one of his most iconic villains, The Riddler, has a new actor behind the question marks.
The iconic Rogues’ Gallery villain has made his official return in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the newly released open-world game from TT Games and Warner Bros. Games, with Matthew Curtis now voicing the role previously played in film by Carrey.
For many fans, though, The Riddler remains inseparable from Jim Carrey’s unforgettable performance in Batman Forever (1995), in which he starred opposite Val Kilmer’s Caped Crusader.
Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film embraced an intentionally exaggerated comic-book style, and Carrey’s version of Edward Nygma became one of the movie’s most memorable elements thanks to the actor’s hyperactive physical comedy and over-the-top energy.
His turn as The Riddler joined a long list of iconic characters, including Ace Ventura, The Mask, The Grinch, and, most recently, Dr. Robotnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog films.

Legacy of the Dark Knight, which launched on May 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, serves as a massive tribute to Batman’s history across film, comics, television, and animation.
Alongside The Riddler, the new game features a huge lineup of Gotham characters that includes Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, Harley Quinn, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, and The Joker, many of whom are inspired by different iterations of those characters throughout Batman’s film history.
While the game’s version of Riddler only loosely mirrors Carrey’s portrayal, with DC continuing to embrace multiverse storytelling and legacy casting (as most recently seen in 2023’s The Flash), many Batman fans still hope Carrey could eventually return as The Riddler in some form.
For now, though, all bets are on that other green villain of his, especially following rumors that Universal Pictures is developing a new live-action movie.
