Disney Retcons Grogu Canon as ‘The Mandalorian’ Era Comes to an End

One of Lucasfilm’s biggest Star Wars characters may no longer be heading toward the Jedi Order after all.

Disney and Lucasfilm are currently promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise’s first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The film arrives May 22 and replaces the scrapped fourth season of The Mandalorian.

That pivot has already raised questions among fans. Jon Favreau previously confirmed that scripts for Season 4 had been completed before Lucasfilm shifted toward a movie instead.

The project also arrives during an uncertain period for Star Wars theatrically. Early box office tracking has suggested The Mandalorian and Grogu could open below Solo: A Star Wars Story, which became one of Lucasfilm’s weakest theatrical performers.

At the same time, Disney has continued expanding the so-called Mandoverse through Disney+ series including Ahsoka. Favreau previously revealed that the original Season 4 would have tied more directly into Grand Admiral Thrawn’s larger storyline.

The movie reportedly changed direction after the transition to theaters, becoming a more standalone adventure aimed at audiences less familiar with the Disney+ shows.

Now, Favreau may have complicated Grogu’s role in the franchise even further.

Jon Favreau Reframes Grogu’s Future in ‘Star Wars’

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Favreau discussed Grogu’s history with the Force and suggested the character’s Jedi background stretches beyond what audiences have seen onscreen.

“He’s not on the typical Jedi path of a youngling, but he has trained with some of the best Jedi teachers that there are,” Favreau tells GamesRadar+. “We know for sure he’s studied with Luke Skywalker. There’s implications that he may have crossed paths with Yoda, because he does recognize the name, is what we imply. And he also was there at the Jedi Temple before Order 66.”

The comments build on existing canon surrounding Grogu’s survival during Order 66 and his later training with Luke Skywalker.

Favreau also stressed that Grogu continues developing his Force abilities despite no longer training directly under a Jedi Master.

“So, it’s a big part in talking to Dave Filoni, and by extension, to what he learned from George [Lucas], which is that the Force is about training,” he continues. “It’s about refining, just like an athletic ability or any skill.”

The larger shift came when Favreau described Grogu’s role moving forward.

“Grogu is now a Mandalorian apprentice,” says Favreau. “He’s been tasked with that, for those people who had watched the show. If you hadn’t watched the show, what you need to know is that he is now going to be a Mandalorian in training.”

Grogu’s Story Has Shifted Since Season 2

Earlier seasons of The Mandalorian framed Grogu’s story very differently.

Season 2 centered heavily around finding a Jedi willing to train him. Luke Skywalker eventually arrived during the finale and took Grogu away specifically to continue his Jedi education.

That storyline reversed quickly when Grogu reunited with Din Djarin during The Book of Boba Fett.

Many fans already viewed that decision as a major creative reset designed to restore the show’s central duo before Season 3 began.

Favreau’s latest comments appear to move even further away from Grogu becoming a traditional Jedi.

“And what’s interesting now is we have a character that’s going to be potentially both Jedi and Mandalorian in Grogu, and we’ll see what his path is.”

That approach sits awkwardly beside traditional Jedi teachings, which often discouraged attachment and divided loyalties.

The change may also reflect Grogu’s importance beyond the shows themselves. Since debuting in 2019, the character has become one of Disney’s most commercially successful Star Wars creations, driving merchandise sales across parks, toys, apparel, and publishing.

Repositioning Grogu as both Force user and Mandalorian potentially gives Lucasfilm more flexibility as the franchise moves beyond The Mandalorian television era.

What do you think of the changes to Grogu’s storyline?
