LEGO Confirms Massive Overhaul for Store on Disney Property

A months-long transformation at the LEGO Store in Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney District is nearly complete. Here’s what Southern California Disney Park guests need to know.

On May 11, Laughing Place reported that a Star Wars-themed LEGO sculpture had been installed in the last remaining empty display frame on the store’s exterior. The new piece depicts Chewbacca piloting an AT-ST against a printed backdrop of the forests of Endor, inspired by Return of the Jedi (1983).

The Star Wars installation fills the yellow-and-white brick-shaped frame positioned closest to the previously unveiled Avengers display, rounding out what is now a trio of new sculptures anchoring the store’s refreshed exterior.

The transformation has been building since earlier this year, when the LEGO Store removed its original Toy Story (1995) sculpture — a fixture outside the Downtown Disney District location since the store first opened alongside the shopping and dining district in 2001. As Disney Dining has followed over the past several months, the replacement statues have been revealed gradually, with the Frozen (2013) and Marvel Studios’ Avengers displays confirmed in a prior update on April 27.

With Chewbacca and the AT-ST now in place, all three of the yellow-and-white framed display windows appear to be occupied. Whether additional sculptures are planned for other parts of the building’s exterior hasn’t been confirmed, and there’s been no word on whether Buzz Lightyear and Woody might eventually return in some updated form to replace the Toy Story piece that started it all.

Still Open Through the Changes

Disneyland Resort has not commented publicly on the exterior refurbishment, and no end date for the project has been announced. The LEGO Store has remained open to Southern California Disney Park guests throughout the construction period.
