Universal Studios Florida Attraction Closed in May Now Expected To Stay Dark Into 2027

Universal Studios Florida is about to lose one of its most recognizable attractions for a long stretch of time, and fans are starting to realize the closure may be bigger than they first expected.

The Horror Make-Up Show officially closes on May 12 as Universal prepares to completely reimagine the experience. When the project was first announced, many guests believed the attraction would only be gone through part of 2026 before reopening later that year. Now, though, Universal has adjusted that timeline again, with the updated version of the show expected to debut in Winter 2027 instead.

That may only sound like a slight delay, but it turns what already felt like a lengthy refurbishment into something much more substantial.

For longtime Universal fans, the Horror Make-Up Show has always been one of those attractions that gave Universal Studios Florida its identity. It never relied on giant roller coasters or advanced ride systems. Instead, it mixed live comedy, audience interaction, horror movie trivia, and practical effects demonstrations into a show that somehow stayed entertaining year after year.

Even guests who didn’t care much about horror usually walked out laughing.

A Major Change for Universal Studios Florida

The current version of the show feels very rooted in classic Universal entertainment. The experience walks guests through movie make-up techniques, practical effects, prosthetics, and fake gore while poking fun at horror movies at the same time.

But Universal’s horror brand looks very different now than it did when much of the current show was created.

Halloween Horror Nights has become one of the company’s biggest attractions overall, and modern horror franchises have exploded in popularity. Universal confirmed the reimagined version of the Horror Make-Up Show will feature both “classic and modern horror properties,” which immediately sparked speculation among fans.

Many now believe the attraction could start incorporating more current horror franchises instead of relying mostly on older films and references.

That could mean anything from Blumhouse properties to more recent horror icons becoming part of the show experience.

At the same time, Universal says the attraction will still maintain the same comedic and chaotic vibe guests love. That’s important because the humor is a huge reason the show lasted this long in the first place.

Fans Are Going To Miss This Show

One thing that makes this closure feel different is how unique the Horror Make-Up Show really is.

Universal Studios Florida has changed dramatically over the years. Many original attractions disappeared as the resort focused more heavily on major intellectual properties and screen-based rides. But the Horror Make-Up Show somehow survived all of it.

That gave the attraction a certain charm.

It became a break from the chaos outside. Guests could escape the heat, sit down indoors, and watch something that felt live and unpredictable. Since the performers interacted with the audience constantly, every presentation felt slightly different.

That’s something modern theme parks don’t offer nearly as often anymore.

And now, guests may be waiting until 2027 before they get to experience the updated version for themselves.

Whether the new show ends up becoming a major upgrade or something entirely different, one thing is clear already: Universal is treating this project as far more than a quick refresh.
