Disney Snuck Mickey Mouse Into Hollywood Studios and the Reason Is Bigger Than You Think

Disney just added Mickey Mouse to the retro billboard taking shape at Hollywood Studios, and the completion of that specific detail signals that the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard transformation is in its absolute final stretch before the May 26 opening date. For anyone who has been following this project, today’s update is the one that makes everything feel real.

The Disney Billboard Is Finished

The retro Walt Disney Studios billboard on the exterior wall of the theater housing The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure is now complete. Mickey Mouse has been added, waving from the top of the mural, and a decorative border now frames the entire design. The full billboard reads Walt Disney Studios, Mickey Mouse, and Silly Symphony Sound Cartoons, pulled directly from a historical design that once looked over Disney’s Hyperion Studio, where production ran from 1926 to 1940. The completed mural turns what was previously a plain exterior wall into a piece of park storytelling that connects the new Walt Disney Studios Courtyard to nearly a century of Disney creative history.

The wall where the billboard now sits previously displayed a Voyage of the Little Mermaid advertisement, which was removed before the current show opened. The finished retro design that now fills that space serves the broader studio campus identity of the reimagined area in a way the previous signage never could.

Other Updates Around the Courtyard

Additional trees have been planted throughout the courtyard in front of and beside the Disney Jr. soundstage, building out the green space that has been a consistent feature of the transformation’s design. New small trees have also appeared in front of The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure, giving the theater’s exterior a more finished setting within the new studio campus environment.

The Disney Jr. building now has a Stage sign painted near its corner, sitting approximately where a red Stage 5 sign once matched the original Hollywood Studios signage aesthetic. A number may be added to the sign later as the finishing details of the courtyard continue to be refined ahead of opening.

What Opens on May 26 at Disney

Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! opens on May 26 alongside the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard itself, making that date the first opportunity for guests to experience the reimagined area. The outdoor space will include green areas and pavement featuring character autographs and handprints, which have been visible in concept art since the transformation was announced. The Sorcerer’s Hat, which was installed above the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation earlier this month after an eleven-year absence from the park, is already in place and will be immediately visible to guests entering the courtyard on opening day.

The Magic of Disney Animation will open later this summer. That experience will include character meet-and-greets, a digital drawing experience with Olaf replacing the live artist format the previous version of the space used, and an Alice in Wonderland-themed playground. Characters are also expected to appear in the outdoor courtyard space in addition to inside the building.

What the Finished Billboard Means

A completed exterior mural featuring Mickey Mouse waving from the top does not appear on a construction project months from opening. It appears when the project is ready to be seen. The combination of the finished billboard, planted trees, new signage on the Disney Jr. building, and the already-installed Sorcerer’s Hat creates a picture of a courtyard that is days, not weeks, away from being ready for guests. May 26 is the confirmed opening date, and based on everything visible at Hollywood Studios right now, that date is not going to slip. Mickey showing up on that wall today was the last piece of a picture that has been coming together for months, and it is now complete.
