Disney Walks Away From Tangled Movie as Director Explains Why

We have been waiting fifteen years for this explanation and it was worth the wait.

Nathan Greno, the director of Disney’s Tangled, sat down with The Direct to promote his new Netflix animated film Swapped, starring Michael B. Jordan, which hits the streamer on May 1st. During that conversation he said something that every Tangled fan has needed to hear since 2010: he explained, clearly and without any Hollywood spin, exactly why there was never a Tangled 2.

And the answer is genuinely one of the more thoughtful things a Disney filmmaker has said publicly about the creative limits of sequel-making in a very long time.

Here is what he told them.

When asked whether Disney had ever developed ideas for a sequel, Greno confirmed they had tried. But before he got into the specifics, he articulated something important about why Tangled in particular presents a uniquely difficult creative problem. Some stories, he explained, are built around a transformation. The whole engine of the narrative runs toward one destination. When the character arrives, the story is done. Not abandoned. Done.

He said it this way: “Once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say? Once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?”

The full quote is worth reading: “No… Again, I’m not against sequels. There was, I will say, after we finished ‘Tangled’… It’s a tricky place, because I’ll put it this way: once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say? Once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?”

Rapunzel’s story is exactly that shape. Confinement, then freedom. Captivity, then choice. A tower she has never left, and then the world. The moment her hair is cut and she steps into her actual life, the narrative is complete. Continuing it is not impossible, but finding the specific story inside that continuation that is worth telling turned out to be.

They Actually Tried to Find It

Here is the part of the story we have not heard before. Disney did not just float the idea of a sequel and move on. They organized a genuine attempt to crack it.

“We actually did an off-site at Disney, and we got the original team together, and we really all talked about it for hours, and we kind of walked away saying, ‘We couldn’t find a story worth telling.'”

The original team. Off-site. Hours. And they walked away with nothing.

For a film that earned $591.7 million globally and built the kind of devoted fanbase that Tangled has, that outcome is genuinely surprising in the best way. It would have been easy to greenlight something and let the commercial logic carry it. Instead the people who cared most about those characters looked each other in the face after hours of trying and admitted they could not find the story.

The result was Tangled Ever After, the 2012 short that covers Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding day, which Greno described as something that “felt natural:” “we did the wedding, because that felt natural. But in general, yeah, there just wasn’t a story that I could find.”

That short exists because fans kept asking about the wedding. The feature sequel does not exist because the creative team was honest enough to admit when they had nothing worth making. We respect that enormously.

What Is Actually Coming: The Live-Action Remake

So the sequel is not happening. What is happening instead is a live-action remake, and it is closer than you might think.

Teagan Croft is Rapunzel. Milo Manheim is Flynn Rider, who told The Direct the role is a lifelong dream and promised fans he will “honor it the best he can.” Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel. Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman, is directing. Filming is expected this summer. A mid-to-late 2027 theatrical release is looking possible based on current reporting.

When Greno was asked about the remake he gave a response that was notably careful. He did not offer endorsement or enthusiasm. He expressed genuine uncertainty about which direction the project is taking: “Well, I’m not sure the approach. We’ve seen these remakes where they kind of stick to the original, and we’ve seen things where they kind of do something else. There’s a lot of different approaches with these remakes.”

That is the person who built Tangled from the ground up saying he does not know what they are going to do with it. We are not reading that as a criticism exactly, but we are reading it as a signal that the remake is its own thing and may diverge from the original in ways that are not yet public.

Greno was also refreshingly honest about where his creative heart actually is. He acknowledged sequels can work, citing Toy Story 2 as the gold standard. He talked about growing up in the eighties excited about new Indiana Jones films and Star Wars entries. But he was clear about what actually gets him going: “I mean, for me, I’ll be honest with you… to create something new, especially in our current environment, to put that out there, that’s the most exciting thing to me. And so, what I’m looking forward to as movies continue, like something like ‘Sinners,’ hugely original, and look at the way that captured audiences. That’s what I’m excited about.”

A director whose passion is in original storytelling over sequels. Interesting context for thinking about Swapped, the film he is actually promoting, and for thinking about how he might feel watching a remake of his most famous work go into production this summer.

What Tangled Fans and Disney Park Guests Should Know

Since we cover the parks closely here: Rapunzel is one of the most beloved princess characters you can encounter at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Character availability varies by day and location, so checking the My Disney Experience or Disneyland app the morning of your visit is the best way to find her.

For Disney+ subscribers, the Tangled content library is actually quite substantial even without a theatrical sequel. You have the original film, a 2022 sing-along version, Tangled Ever After, Tangled Before Ever After, the full Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure animated series, and Tangled: The Series — Short Cuts. There is real content here for fans who want to spend time with these characters.

The 2027 live-action release is also worth putting on your radar if you follow the relationship between Disney films and park experiences. When a major IP gets a new theatrical entry, it typically triggers new merchandise, character wardrobe updates, and sometimes new park experiences tied to the film’s imagery and cast. A 2027 Tangled could mean a different kind of Rapunzel presence at the parks than what guests encounter today.

If you want to understand what Greno is building when he is not being asked about Tangled sequels, Swapped on Netflix from May 1st is the answer. And if Tangled is your family’s thing and Rapunzel is a must-do character meeting on your Disney vacation, check the app early on your park morning. Character schedules shift constantly and knowing before you go in makes the difference between it happening and it not. We will have more on the live-action remake as details continue to surface.
