Disney’s Hollywood Studios is making another adjustment to its entertainment offerings—but this time, it’s not tied to refurbishment work or a long-term overhaul. Instead, a popular indoor attraction is being paused to make way for something that has become increasingly common across Disney parks: limited-time merchandise events tied to major fan celebrations.

Newly released details confirm that Vacation Fun–An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie at the Mickey Shorts Theater will go dark starting April 29, 2026. While temporary closures are part of the park experience, this particular shift highlights how Disney continues to evolve the balance between attractions and retail-driven experiences.

For guests looking to cool off and relax, the Mickey Shorts Theater has been a dependable stop inside the park. Vacation Fun delivers a fast-moving animated adventure starring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, inspired by the contemporary Mickey Mouse cartoon series.

The show has become a favorite for families and anyone seeking a break from the Florida heat, offering a quick, air-conditioned experience packed with humor and familiar characters. It’s especially appealing for those who prefer something more low-key compared to the park’s more intense attractions.

Rather than closing for updates or repairs, the theater is being transformed for a special Star Wars Day event, held each year on May 4, according to WDWMagic.

During this time, the Mickey Shorts Theater will serve as a dedicated space for a May the Fourth merchandise release. This move reflects Disney’s growing focus on event-based offerings, where exclusive items and themed releases take center stage.

To manage demand, a virtual queue system will be implemented for merchandise locations at both Hollywood Studios and Disney Springs, signaling just how popular these limited-time events have become. This change is part of a broader shift happening across Disney parks worldwide. Special merchandise drops and themed events are playing an increasingly large role in the overall guest experience.

From collectible items to exclusive apparel, these offerings often draw large crowds and create a sense of urgency among fans. In response, Disney has been adapting existing spaces—including theaters and other venues—to accommodate these retail-focused experiences.

The temporary closure of Vacation Fun illustrates how these priorities are evolving. While rides and shows remain a core part of the parks, short-term retail activations are becoming a major draw in their own right.

For those visiting in late April or early May, the timing may not be ideal. Indoor attractions are particularly valuable at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which offers fewer shaded and air-conditioned spaces compared to other parks.

Families with younger children may feel this loss the most, as Vacation Fun provides a calm alternative to high-intensity experiences like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. At this time, Disney has not announced a specific reopening date for the show. The closure is expected to be temporary, with Vacation Fun likely returning sometime later in 2026.

At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
