REPORT: Ralph Fiennes Asked To Return as Lord Voldemort in ‘Harry Potter’
Few villains in modern fantasy carry the same shadow as Lord Voldemort — a character whose presence shaped the entire arc of the Harry Potter saga long before audiences ever saw his face.
Decades after the franchise first exploded onto screens, the Dark Lord remains one of pop culture’s most recognizable antagonists. The question now facing HBO’s upcoming reboot is not whether Voldemort will return, but who will eventually step into the role.

For years, Ralph Fiennes’ portrayal defined the character for movie audiences. His chilling performance anchored the later entries of the film series and helped turn Voldemort into one of the most iconic villains in fantasy cinema.
Now, as HBO prepares its long-gestating television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels, speculation surrounding Voldemort’s successor has quietly intensified.
Lord Voldemort Casts Shadow Over ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot
Few villains loom as large over modern fantasy as Voldemort. Introduced as the central antagonist of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, the dark wizard — born Tom Marvolo Riddle — built a reputation for terror long before readers ever saw him fully appear.

Voldemort’s story begins decades before Harry Potter enters Hogwarts. Once a gifted student obsessed with power and immortality, Riddle gradually abandoned his humanity through dark magic, eventually transforming himself into the pale, snake-like figure that became one of fiction’s most recognizable villains.
The character reached global audiences through the Harry Potter film series, where Ralph Fiennes portrayed Voldemort across multiple installments beginning with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). His performance leaned heavily into the character’s cold theatricality, blending aristocratic menace with calculated cruelty.
Now, attention has shifted to HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television reboot — and the mystery of who will play Voldemort next.

Speculation Builds Around the Dark Lord’s Future
Despite persistent speculation, the role has not yet been officially cast. Irish actor Cillian Murphy was widely rumored to be in contention, particularly after Fiennes himself sparked discussion about the idea.
Murphy later shut down the Voldemort rumors, denying any involvement in the project. Even so, the speculation has not slowed.
Other names have surfaced across fan circles and entertainment reports. Audiobook narrator Matthew Macfadyen has been floated as a possible contender, while some rumors suggest the studio may be testing actors across a wider range of casting possibilities.

Among the most widely discussed candidates is Tilda Swinton, the actress known for roles in Doctor Strange and The Chronicles of Narnia. The idea of Swinton stepping into the role has circulated for months, particularly in fan discussions imagining a new interpretation of Voldemort.
The suggestion has sparked debate online. Some fans see casting a female Voldemort as an intriguing reinvention for the HBO adaptation, while others argue the character should remain closer to Rowling’s original depiction.
Fiennes himself, however, appears open to the possibility.
Ralph Fiennes Weighs In on the Next Voldemort
During an appearance on The Claudia Winkleman Show, via BBC News, Fiennes explained that he had once been asked whether he might return to play Voldemort.

The conversation happened “some years ago,” the actor said, adding that he would have welcomed the opportunity.
However, no further discussions followed. Fiennes now believes “that ship has sailed,” suggesting he does not expect to reprise the role in HBO’s new series.
When the conversation turned to potential successors, the actor also addressed the long-running speculation surrounding Swinton.
According to Fiennes, the actor would be “fantastic” in the role — an endorsement that has only fueled further debate among fans following the reboot’s development.

The network itself has remained largely silent on the matter.
Speaking last month, HBO chief Casey Bloys said the studio had not finalized any decisions regarding Voldemort’s casting and suggested discussions were still ongoing behind the scenes.
For now, the series will begin where Rowling’s story originally started — with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
In that first installment, Voldemort exists only as a weakened spirit after failing to kill Harry as a baby. The Dark Lord secretly inhabits Professor Quirrell’s body while searching for the Philosopher’s Stone, which could restore his physical form.

Later stories expand the villain’s role dramatically, charting his return to power and the wizarding war that ultimately engulfs Hogwarts and the wider magical world.
The reboot’s longer television format could also open the door to deeper exploration of Voldemort’s past.
Some fans have speculated that Adolescence actor Owen Cooper may appear as Tom Riddle in Season 2 of Harry Potter, which features a memory of the young Voldemort brought to life by his old diary. The rumor has not been confirmed, but the episodic structure of the series could allow the show to examine Riddle’s transformation in far greater detail.
Until casting is announced, the identity of the next Voldemort remains one of the HBO series’ most closely watched mysteries.
