‘Harry Potter’ Film Trio Could Return in HBO Series’ Season 7 Finale

We finally have our first look at HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The eight-episode series is a new adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling’s novels and kicks off a planned seven-season run expected to span a decade.

Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton lead the new series as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, supported by a large ensemble that includes John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore), Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid), and Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape).

Warner Bros. has already said the “classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise,” but this is otherwise a full recast. Well, almost.

Warwick Davis is the only actor from the films who’s returning, reprising his role as Professor Filius Flitwick, despite early messaging that the series would be entirely separate from the films. That raises the obvious question—could any of the original stars return?

Some actors from the original cast have expressed interest in coming back in different roles, including Matthew Lewis and Jason Isaacs, but nothing has been confirmed beyond Davis.

Still, attention naturally turns to Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. The Deathly Hallows – Part II (2011) epilogue, which shows older versions of the trio 19 years after Hogwarts, presents an easy opportunity for a cameo when the series reaches that point. Unfortunately, several factors make that unlikely.

The series is expected to run for around 10 years, meaning HBO can simply age up its current cast rather than bring back the original trio. By the time the story reaches the epilogue, Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson will also be significantly older than the characters they would need to portray.

There’s also the ongoing divide between the three actors and Rowling, who they have publicly distanced themselves from in recent years due to her views on gender identity.

While cameos would bring the story full circle, especially by revisiting the final scene, there is currently nothing to suggest it will happen.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO on Christmas 2026.
