Update: Marvel Star Accidentally Spoils ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

One Marvel star may have just dropped a massive spoiler for Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

The Marvel Studios machine rarely allows secrets to slip. Cast members routinely joke about ironclad NDAs (with Tom Holland’s loose lips becoming an open joke-turned-marketing-tool), and even casual press appearances tend to be carefully managed. That made one recent offhand comment feel less like chatter and more like a genuine leak.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Prepares for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is approaching another crossroads. Several core heroes have exited or shifted roles, and the studio appears intent on reshaping its next chapter with bigger, riskier swings that draw from decades of comic-book history and multiple timelines.

Slated for release on December 18, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday is already positioned as one of the franchise’s most ambitious projects. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo return to direct for the first time since Avengers: Endgame, replacing the Kang-focused plans abandoned after Jonathan Majors was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and harassment with a new central threat.

That threat is Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in a sharp pivot from his years as Tony Stark. A widely watched “chair reveal” livestream in 2025 unveiled an extensive cast and underscored the scale Marvel is aiming for.

Among those confirmed were Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and James Marsden (Cyclops).

Several veterans from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men era also joined, including Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), reinforcing Marvel’s push toward a unified cinematic multiverse.

But while Marvel may be keeping the events of the film tightly under wraps, one of these stars has just revealed a massive spoiler.

A Slip From Magneto

During an interview with Jake Hamilton on his YouTube channel Jake’s Takes, McKellen appeared to casually reference a sequence from production.

He said he “destroyed New Jersey the other day,” then quickly added, “I perhaps shouldn’t have said that.”

The remark appeared to be an accidental reveal. Hamilton did not press for more information, instead steering the conversation forward.

The two went on to discuss McKellen returning to Erik Lehnsherr 12 years after X-Men: Days of Future Past. He described reuniting with Stewart as a highlight, revisiting a partnership that defined multiple X-Men films.

Online, speculation has, of course, focused on McKellan’s comments about New Jersey. Some fans linked the comment to Ms. Marvel, where Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, lives in New Jersey and is revealed to carry the X-Gene.

Others pointed to WandaVision, which placed Wanda Maximoff in Westview, also in New Jersey. In the comics, Magneto has family ties to the character, fueling theories that the setting could connect multiple storylines.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Contends with Controversy

The apparent spoiler arrives as debate around the film’s direction intensifies.

Downey returns in a different role. Chris Evans is expected back as Steve Rogers. Legacy X-Men actors rejoin the fold. The Russos again take the helm. The strategy resembles a calculated reunion tour – one that the most skeptical fans believe is an overt attempt to mine lingering nostalgia for the MCU’s glory days.

Supporters frame it differently. After several uneven entries, a large-scale crossover anchored by recognizable characters could stabilize the franchise and restore audience confidence ahead of the next era.

Either way, McKellen’s comment has already shifted expectations. If Magneto truly levels part of New Jersey, the destruction signals blockbuster scale.
