‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ Arrives on London’s West End This Month

More than 30 years after its release, The Muppet Christmas Carol continues to cast a spell over audiences each festive season.

First hitting cinemas in 1992, the Brian Henson–directed film retold Charles Dickens’ timeless classic novella A Christmas Carol through the humour and heart of Jim Henson’s Muppets, led by Michael Caine’s beloved performance as Ebenezer Scrooge. With Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit and The Great Gonzo serving as Dickens himself, the film has endured as both a faithful adaptation and a uniquely spirited Christmas tale.

Now, London audiences will once again be able to experience it on the big screen. The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square has confirmed that The Muppet Christmas Carol will return later this month, bringing a wave of holiday nostalgia to the West End.

The screenings, which extend throughout December, include sing-along and standard versions, catering to audiences who either want to enjoy one of the film’s many musical numbers with their fellow cinemagoers, or celebrate the beloved 1992 classic in silence.

Tickets are now available to purchase through the cinema’s official website.

Meanwhile, the movie is also due to return to select U.K. venues and theatres this season for its live orchestra presentation, allowing fans to experience the film’s score performed in person. Here’s the official description for The Muppet Christmas Carol in Live Concert:

Disney’s The Muppet Christmas Carol will be presented live in concert this winter across the UK, featuring a screening of the complete film with its musical score performed by a live orchestra.

The Muppet Christmas Carol sees The Muppets perform the classic Charles Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo, as Dickens, narrates the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat. The film also features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Gonzo as the narrator Charles Dickens, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig, and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim. Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases – past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

The original score was composed by Miles Goodman (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, “Little Shop of Horrors”) with songs by Oscar®, Emmy® and Grammy®-winning songwriter Paul Williams (“Rainbow Connection”, “Evergreen”).

For those staying home, both the original and the version of The Muppet Christmas Carol featuring the lost song “When Love Is Gone” are available to stream on Disney+.

But there are even more ways to enjoy the film, including a picture book titled “The Muppet Christmas Carol: The Illustrated Holiday Classic”, Funko’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol Spirit of Giving Card Game”, and two brand-new collectible advent calendars.
