Zack Snyder Issues New Henry Cavill as Superman Statement Amid DCU Drama

It was meant to be simple.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, the plan was to wipe the slate clean–a new universe, a new Superman, and a unified vision. But what started as a promise of clarity has grown increasingly messy, tangled between legacy stars, confused fans, and the ever-persistent ghost of Zack Snyder’s DC era.

In 2022, Henry Cavill surprised fans when he revealed he wouldn’t be returning as Superman after all–just weeks after his cameo in Black Adam (2022) reignited hopes for his comeback. Gunn later explained that the situation unfolded before his and Safran’s studio deal had even closed.

“It’s terrible … the day our deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back … the plan was to come in and do a new Superman,” Gunn said, noting that Cavill “handled it all with grace,” only asking that he be the one to inform his fans personally.

Gunn later clarified that Cavill wasn’t “fired,” but simply not cast in the reboot. “For me, the right story and the filmmakers we have for that story—it isn’t Henry,” Gunn added. The new Superman film, Superman (2025), stars David Corenswet, following the animated Creature Commandos. Supergirl (2026), featuring House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock, will follow in 2026.

Still, Snyder’s shadow looms large. The director recently posted a black-and-white image of Cavill in costume captioned, “Henry Cavill is Superman.” Fans immediately reignited debates about Cavill’s potential return or a separate Snyderverse revival. Netflix even fueled speculation by sharing an image featuring Cavill’s Superman and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Now, Snyder has done it again, posting a new photo of Cavill with the caption, “Henry in his natural setting.” Fans flooded the comments with praise like “the one and only” and “this is the Superman of our generation,” keeping the Cavill comeback movement alive.

All this unfolds as Gunn’s new DCU faces growing pains. The original DCEU, launched by Snyder in 2013 with Man of Steel, earned over $670 million worldwide and introduced Cavill’s stoic Superman. But follow-ups like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017) divided fans and critics alike, and Snyder’s eventual exit fractured the franchise beyond repair.

Though Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) restored his vision, Warner Bros. opted to reboot with Gunn and Safran. But early reactions to the new continuity have been mixed, with some fans confused about what’s canon and what isn’t.

Meanwhile, Cavill has moved on from capes to commanding roles. After departing The Witcher, he headlined Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle (2024), reunited with Guy Ritchie for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024), and is set to star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González in In the Grey. He’s also spearheading Amazon’s upcoming Warhammer 40,000 universe–a dream project for the lifelong fan.

Yet despite his success beyond DC, Snyder’s posts prove that Cavill’s Superman remains a defining image. Whether nostalgia or hint, one thing is certain–to many fans, Henry Cavill is still Superman, and DC’s new universe may never fully escape his cape.

  1. What was started by Christopher Reeves was continued, perfectly, by Snyder and Cavill. For whatever reason, ill informed executives seeking only the quick buck, decided to go with James Gunn they made their second mistake, believing Gunns own, perfectly manicured self publicity.
His ” Superman ” proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that his skill does not match his own created myth of self-serve.
Sorry, but Henry IS Superman. Snyder WOULD BE the saviour of DC movies.
