Could Universal Be Forced to Add Chaperones After Horror Nights Chaos?

Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) at Universal Orlando Resort has been one of the most anticipated events of the year for both thrill-seekers and horror fans alike. With the screams of terror echoing through haunted houses and scare zones, the event offers an experience designed to provide spine-chilling fun.

However, as the event grows in popularity, especially with the arrival of fan-favorite attractions like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Fallout, there’s an emerging concern that’s leaving many attendees frustrated and disillusioned: the behavior of younger guests.

While the event is known for its thrilling scares and immersive atmosphere, some guests have recently shared discontent regarding the unruly behavior of teenagers, particularly in lines and other crowded areas. Complaints have surfaced that these teens, who often attend the event in groups, are disrupting the experience for others.

As more guests voice their concerns, the question of whether Universal Orlando should implement a stricter policy, such as requiring chaperones for those under 18, is becoming increasingly relevant.

A Reddit user, known by the handle 73028194, detailed their experience during a recent visit to HHN, providing insight into the kind of disruptions some attendees are facing.

The post paints a picture of a chaotic night, where young guests were seen engaging in inappropriate behavior, seemingly oblivious to their surroundings.

HHN NEEDS a chaperone requirement. We went last night (9.13) and had a great time, we always do. I also know there is an extra pull this year because of FNAF and Fallout, but the issue with unruly teens is out of control. All over the park were there groups of teens whether on high school date nights or just friend groups-who you’d think have never been in a social setting before.

Standing line for terrified there was a group of two boys and two girls (clearly date nights) because they were trying to get to third base with people around them. Shortly after, they had the bright idea to start listing their favorite slurs by ranking.

Few hours later, another group of teen boys were running up and harassing tons of people walking down the street for TikTok clips I guess, jumping and climbing on strangers who were walking away. Also found them shouting stripper phrases at the club horror dancers.

I’m all for the parks being able to accommodate everyone, but I definitely believe there should be provisions for events like HHN that require adult chaperones.

Such actions didn’t go unnoticed, as other guests shared their own frustrations in the comments section.

I’ve been going to HHN for 8 years. The teens are getting worse and worse. This year is top tier in my book. I’ve kindly told some to back off, or calm down and they laugh, call me names, and run away. My partner and I were in line on Friday(9.12) for El Artista. A group behind us of about 8 kids was not only hitting us when the line moved and stopped but were also surrounding us. Fully engulfed in their group a few times- complete with stepping on shoes, running into my partner’s backpack, and elbowing. I told them “You guys need to back up. We don’t know you and you’re surrounding us like we’re your friends. As strangers, we would like a little personal space.” They all got quiet and looked utterly confused, like they were doing nothing wrong. – Things like this have happened every day after opening weekend. Props to Universal for bringing more security after opening weekend though.

These incidents have led some to question whether Universal should take a stronger stance on monitoring the behavior of younger guests, particularly those without an adult present. While Universal Orlando’s website notes that Halloween Horror Nights is not recommended for children under 13, there is no formal policy in place requiring chaperones for those under 18.

With the increase in incidents of poor behavior, many believe it’s time for Universal to consider such a change.

As the Reddit post gained traction, other guests chimed in, sharing their thoughts on the matter.

Honestly, I think they should just make it 18+ after last night. Large group of younger boys who had some obviously 18+ chaperones. A bunch of the boys started out right fighting and the chaperones egged it on. “Don’t take that”… “You’re going to let him neg on you like that, do something about it!”

My biggest disappointment was when I went and told a security guard. His response was “So they are fighting amongst themselves?”

I just lost all hope after that. Family and I left the park.

In response to these growing concerns, Universal Orlando has reportedly stepped up security measures, particularly after the event’s opening weekend. While this action has been appreciated by many, the overall sentiment is that the park may need to do more to ensure that guests can enjoy the event without feeling uncomfortable or unsafe.

While some guests are calling for an age restriction, it’s clear that there are various viewpoints on the matter. Others believe that the issue could be mitigated with better enforcement of existing rules, rather than imposing age limits altogether.

What are your thoughts on this growing issue at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights? Have you experienced similar behavior from younger guests, or do you think age restrictions should be implemented? Share your thoughts in the comments below—we’d love to hear from you!
