‘Ratatouille 2’? Beloved Star Spills on Sequel Possibilities!

The 2007 animated film Ratatouille, from Disney and Pixar, holds a special place in the hearts of many. Its charming story, delightful animation, and unforgettable characters have ensured its legacy, with fans continuing to wonder if a sequel could ever be on the horizon.

While Ratatouille was undeniably a hit, with its widespread acclaim and even inspiration for theme park attractions at Disneyland Paris and EPCOT, the question of a follow-up has remained unanswered.

As we’ve seen with other Pixar franchises, sequels have become a popular trend. Films like Toy Story 4 (2019) and Inside Out 2 (2024) have received both critical acclaim and commercial success. For fans of Ratatouille, it’s only natural to wonder if Remy and Linguini’s journey might continue on the big screen.

But will that day ever come?

Recently, Patton Oswalt, who voiced Remy in the beloved film, shared his thoughts on the possibility of a sequel.

In a recent interview with Collider, Oswalt was asked about his interest in reprising his role for a Ratatouille sequel. His response was measured and insightful, offering a glimmer of hope to fans eager for more, while also acknowledging the creative challenges that come with making sequels.

Oswalt noted that while he isn’t ruling out the idea entirely, any potential sequel would be contingent on one key factor: the involvement of Ratatouille’s writer and director, Brad Bird. According to Oswalt:

“You just said the key to it. The world where that exists is where Brad thinks of a great idea, and until he does that, it’s not gonna happen. So I’m totally happy with no sequel unless he comes up with something amazing. And I trust in Brad.”

Oswalt’s words reflect the care and consideration that went into the original film. The Ratatouille universe is one that many fans feel is best left in the hands of those who first crafted it, and Oswalt’s trust in Bird’s creative vision underscores the importance of getting it right before pursuing a sequel.

Brad Bird, the genius behind the Ratatouille script, has previously expressed some hesitancy about revisiting the world of Remy and Linguini. In a 2018 interview with io9, Bird shared that he felt the story had been told and that the trend of sequels and reboots was somewhat at odds with his own creative inclinations.

“You know, I feel like that story is told. I’m told I need to do an Iron Giant 2 and I’m told I need to remake everything that I’ve made and no one apparently wants anything new anymore. I’m a little at odds with society on that. I would like to do some new things.”

However, Bird’s career since then has involved returning to the Pixar fold. After Ratatouille, Bird directed Incredibles 2 (2018) and contributed to Toy Story 4. He’s currently hard at work on Incredibles 3, which is slated for release in 2028.

Despite his previous reluctance, Bird’s return to Pixar projects could mean that his perspective on revisiting Ratatouille may evolve with time. Just like the 14-year gap between The Incredibles and its sequel, it’s always possible that Bird could come up with a story idea that he finds worthy of continuation.

So, what do you think? Would you like to see a Ratatouille sequel? Do you think Patton Oswalt’s return as Remy is essential, or would you rather see something entirely new? As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Join the conversation in the comments below!
