Bluey” Proves Too Powerful—Even the NFL Couldn’t Compete

Parents everywhere know the magic of Bluey. The Australian animated series has become a household staple, turning ordinary family moments into heartfelt stories. But what no one expected was for Bluey to nearly derail an NFL player’s career.

Hunter Renfrow, a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, had just been cut from the team’s roster. His future in football seemed bleak, until a sudden roster shakeup gave him a second chance. The Panthers traded veteran Adam Thielen, placed another receiver on injured reserve, and suddenly needed Renfrow back. It was the opportunity every player waits for.

The problem? Renfrow missed all the calls offering him that chance. His phone lit up with repeated calls from his general manager, head coach, and agent. Normally, a missed call like that could mean the difference between another shot on the field or staying home for good.

So why wasn’t he answering? The answer is both hilarious and relatable: Bluey.

The Cartoon That Stopped Football in Its Tracks

Renfrow’s daughter was watching Bluey in the car, and she wasn’t about to let a call interrupt her episode. Every time the phone rang, she declined it so she could keep enjoying the adventures of Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli. By the time Renfrow realized what was happening, he had 10 missed calls waiting for him.

For a few tense moments, it looked like a children’s show had outpowered the NFL. Thankfully, Renfrow eventually returned the calls and learned the Panthers wanted him back. The family cartoon had almost sidelined him, but instead, it became part of one of the funniest comeback stories in sports.

A New Beginning

Renfrow sat out all of the 2024 season due to illness, but with his health improving, he’s back and ready to play. The Panthers have high hopes for him to fill the gap at wide receiver and provide veteran leadership for young quarterback Bryce Young.

It’s the perfect blend of two worlds parents know well: the balance between family and career. For Renfrow, being “Dad” in that car mattered just as much as being an NFL wideout. And for Bluey fans? It’s proof the show’s power reaches far beyond the living room.

Not even football could compete.
