‘Back to the Future Part IV’: What To Expect From the Most Unwanted Sequel Ever
40 years after Marty McFly first revved up the DeLorean and rocketed through time, Back to the Future (1985) is returning to theaters.
Universal Pictures has announced a special re-release of director/co-writer Robert Zemeckis and co-writer/co-producer Bob Gale’s sci-fi comedy adventure classic, arriving October 31 in formats including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and D-Box.
To mark the occasion, a new trailer teases Marty’s adventure with a fresh guitar riff on Alan Silvestri’s timeless theme. Watch it below:
Released in 1985, Back to the Future became the highest-grossing film of the year, winning an Academy Award and sparking a cultural juggernaut.
Sequels in 1989 and 1990 continued the series on the big screen, while an animated series, comic books, video games, and the award-winning Back to the Future: The Musical kept Hill Valley alive for many more decades.
But naturally, the big question still comes up: will there ever be a Back to the Future Part IV? Bob Gale has long shut down the idea. Speaking at Universal Fan Fest Nights earlier this year, he said, “I don’t know why they keep talking about that! I mean, do they think that if they say it enough times, we’re going to actually do it? … ‘Oh Bob, when is there going to be a Back to the Future 4?’ Never. ‘When is there going to be a prequel?’ Never. ‘When is there going to be a spinoff?’ Never.”

Still, fans can’t help imagining. A reboot would almost certainly re-tread Marty’s original arc, but a sequel would demand something different.
Would it follow Marty’s children, as teased in Back to the Future Part II (1989)? Could Doc Brown’s kids Jules and Verne take the DeLorean for their own adventure? Or perhaps a future-set story in 2085, where time travel itself is outlawed, forcing a new generation to fight for the legacy of the invention.
Either way, Gale is clear why the trilogy endures: “What’s so great is seeing the next generation of kids that are being touched by this and [say], ‘Gee, my parents were once kids.’”
Whether or not Back to the Future 4 ever happens remains to be seen, but this October, fans can relive the magic of the original 1985 film. And your kids? They’re gonna love it.
Back to the Future releases in select theaters on October 31 in Dolby Cinema, 4DX and D-Box formats. The film is also getting a Steelbook 4K Blu-Ray Release on October 14.
