‘Deadpool’ and ‘X-Men’ Canceled, Franchise Set to Focus On Female Versions of Wade and Logan

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) was a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film brought back Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their iconic roles–Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine, respectively–and, unsurprisingly, was a massive box office success, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide.

It’s also the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and the 20th-highest-grossing film ever (and the second-highest-grossing film of 2024), marking a landmark achievement for both the MCU and “The Multiverse Saga,” which has seen its fair share of failings.

But while fans are eagerly awaiting possible Deadpool and Wolverine cameos and crossovers in future films like Avengers: Doomsday (2026)–although Reynolds and Jackman’s names were nowhere to be seen in the recent epic casting reveal, which included Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), and Tom Hiddleston (Loki)–Marvel’s focus is now shifting in an unexpected direction for its comic books.

In a bold move, Marvel Comics is ending its solo “Deadpool” series with issue #15 (or the milestone “Deadpool #350”) and relaunching a project that combines the Merc with a Mouth and the iconic Wolverine once again (via Bleeding Cool).

The new series, titled “Wolverines and Deadpools,” will see the return of the daughters of Deadpool and Wolverine—Ellie Camacho and Laura Kinney (X-23), respectively. This relaunch is a significant shift, especially since Ellie’s controversial story arc, which saw her temporarily taking over as Deadpool after Wade Wilson’s death in “Deadpool #7.”

Written by Cody Ziglar with art by Rogê Antônio, the series will explore how Ellie and Laura stepped into their fathers’ shoes in an outing filled with action and family dynamics. Fans of both characters can expect a mix of humor, grit, and the strong bond between the iconic mutants and their daughters.

However, this change comes amid the recent cancelation of “Weapon X-Men” (also (via Bleeding Cool), an X-Men spinoff that was originally planned to be an ongoing comic book series series but will now conclude with its fifth and final issue in June 2025.

Fortunately, fans can expect to see the likes of Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier/Professor X from the X-Men movies (and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy/Beast from some of the earlier X-Men films (he also appeared in The Marvels) return to the big screen in Avengers: Doomsday.

As Marvel shifts its focus in both the cinematic and comic universe, fans still have a lot to look forward to, from “Wolverines and Deadpools” to the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. It’s also clear that the legacy of Deadpool and Wolverine, along with their daughters, will continue to play a significant role in the future of the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, it just might not be the cinematic one.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026. “Wolverines and Deadpools” #1 (of 3) goes on sale on July 2, 2025. Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+.
