REPORT: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Release Heading for the Axe
There’s a lot riding on Avengers: Doomsday (2026) – but according to a new report, we might not even get it as planned.
A harsh but true fact is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the unstoppable force it once was. Recent films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and The Marvels (2023) underperformed at the box office, while several Disney+ shows have struggled to retain audience interest.
Throw in delays, reshuffled release dates, and the Jonathan Majors controversy and it’s clear Marvel isn’t riding the same high it once was. Sure, there have been some wins since Avengers: Endgame (2019), but overall, fans aren’t as locked in as they used to be. The general vibe? The MCU needs a serious course correction—and fast—if it wants to reclaim its throne as the ultimate box office powerhouse.
Marvel’s Latest Course Correction
Fortunately, it seems like Marvel Studios is making extra efforts to do just that. In the wake of booting Majors from the franchise after the Kang actor was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and harassment, Marvel has hired Robert Downey Jr. to return to the MCU – not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom, the Multiverse Saga’s new big-bad.
Clearly hoping to revive some of the magic that made Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War so successful, Marvel has also brought the Russo brothers back on board to direct its upcoming two Avengers films.
While details on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are far and few between right now, the rumored cast list for both films is lengthy, with everyone from current MCU heroes like Captain America (Anthony Mackie) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) to multiversal variants such as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iterations of Spider-Man said to cameo in either film.
However, it seems like we may need to wait longer than anticipated to find out if these rumors hold any truth.
‘Avengers: Doomsay’ Faces Possible Delay
Industry insider Jeff Sneider recently claimed that Avengers: Doomsday will likely be delayed.
During an episode of The Hot Mic, Sneider said: “I heard a rumor that [‘Avengers: Doomsday’] might push. I think that the release date could [be pushed] to the next slot. I don’t know when the next slot is, but it could just miss one slot, so it’d be pushed like a few months.”
Sneider also added that Marvel does not “know who’s in the movie” yet. “That’s what I heard,” he said. “I heard we still don’t know who’s gonna ultimately be in this movie and who’s not. Like we don’t know who’s gonna be available, like we don’t know any of that. So I think they’re still just figuring out what that ensemble looks like.”
The film is currently slated to release on May 1, 2026. Spider-Man 4 – which will see Tom Holland return as Peter Parker – was recently pushed back a week to July 31, 2026, which may mean Avengers: Doomsday receives the next slot, which is in November.
Until Marvel says otherwise, we have to assume that Avengers: Doomsday is still releasing in May. But considering the fact that the film hasn’t even started production yet, a delay isn’t the worst idea in the world.
It would also align with another recent rumor shared by fellow insider Daniel Richtman, who claimed that Doomsday is now set to begin filming in London in April instead of March as the script undergoes revisions.
Among the many gripes fans have with modern Marvel, the drop in CGI quality is a big one. Delaying the movie could actually be a blessing in disguise, giving the visual effects teams much-needed time to perfect the intergalactic spectacle. After recent hits and misses (we’re looking at you, floating MODOK head), Marvel can’t afford another VFX disaster—especially with a film of this scale.
