Disney World Forced To Close Guest Experience Due To Dangerous Threat

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is a one-of-a-kind retreat at Walt Disney World, offering guests a rustic escape filled with outdoor adventures.

Nestled among 750 acres of pine and cypress forest, this resort is home to a variety of activities, from horseback riding at Tri-Circle-D Ranch to archery lessons, fishing excursions, and even a lively dinner show at Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. Guests can stay in cozy cabins, park their RVs, or set up tents for a camping experience unlike any other on Disney property.

Among the many recreational opportunities available at Fort Wilderness, canoeing and kayaking are fan favorites. These activities allow guests to explore the tranquil waterways that weave through the resort, offering a peaceful and immersive nature experience. However, Disney has temporarily suspended canoe and kayak rentals due to alligators being spotted too close to guest areas.

While alligator sightings are not unusual in Florida, Disney takes extra precautions when they appear near areas where guests could be at risk. Canoeing and kayaking at Fort Wilderness have always been “at your own risk” activities, with warning signs reminding visitors about potential wildlife encounters. However, when alligators get too close, Disney brings in specialists to safely remove them before reopening the activity.

This isn’t the first time Fort Wilderness has temporarily shut down water-based recreation. Disney remains vigilant in managing wildlife on its property, particularly after a tragic alligator incident at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in 2016. Since then, the company has strengthened its safety protocols, including additional fencing and signage, to minimize risks.

While canoeing and kayaking are currently unavailable, Fort Wilderness still offers plenty of ways to have fun. Guests can take part in an archery lesson, rent a bike to explore scenic trails, or visit the ranch to meet the horses that appear in Disney parades. The Chip ‘n’ Dale Campfire Sing-A-Long provides a cozy way to enjoy the evening, complete with marshmallow roasting and classic Disney movies under the stars.

Disney has not provided a reopening date for canoe and kayak rentals, but as always, guest safety is the top priority. Until then, visitors to Fort Wilderness can take advantage of its many other offerings and experience the magic of Disney in a more natural setting.
