Tim Allen Announces Retirement Plans, Reveals His Final Project Before Stepping Away
Few actors have achieved the level of success that Disney Legend Tim Allen has enjoyed over his illustrious career in film and television. Though he didn’t step into the acting world until his mid-thirties, once he did, there was no stopping him.
Within just three years of his first TV role, Allen became a household name as Tim Taylor in the hit sitcom Home Improvement.

However, it was his role in the Disney family that solidified his place as a beloved star. In 1994, Allen played Scott Calvin, the character who famously becomes Santa Claus in the holiday classic The Santa Clause.
The film’s massive success led to two sequels—The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006)—as well as a Disney+ series that premiered in 2022, keeping the Christmas magic alive for new generations.
The Legendary Buzz Lightyear
Along with his iconic portrayal of Santa, Allen also voiced Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise, a role that would become one of his most beloved. From four main films to numerous TV specials and video games, Buzz became a character close to Allen’s heart.
His dedication to the role shows, as he continually returns to voice the Space Ranger for each new installment. Whether it’s in a new Toy Story film or another special, Buzz is undoubtedly a character who will always be tied to Allen’s legacy.
A New Chapter in Shifting Gears
Recently, Allen has taken on a new role on the ABC comedy Shifting Gears, where he stars as Matt Parker, a widower whose estranged daughter returns home with her two kids in tow.
The series has quickly become a fan favorite, shattering ABC’s six-year viewership record, thanks to its heartfelt humor and relatable storyline. Co-starring Kat Dennings, Seann William Scott, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis, Shifting Gears marks a return to Allen’s TV roots.

But despite the show’s success, Allen has hinted that this could be his final acting project. In a recent interview with USA Today, the Galaxy Quest (1999) star shared that his retirement is fast approaching.
“This probably will be the end of it,” says Allen of his TV career, though he continues to be a popular draw in both movies (“The Santa Clause 2”) and on the stand-up comedy circuit. “That sounds depressing, but I did (‘Shifting Gears’) because it seemed like a good idea that would be fun. That’s really it.”
A Character Closer to Home
What Allen particularly enjoys about his new role is that his character, Matt Parker, is more like him than many of the roles he’s played in the past. Before agreeing to join the show, Allen made it clear that he wanted to portray a character who reflected his own personal beliefs and personality—and Matt does just that.
It’s a role he deeply connects with, which has made his portrayal all the more meaningful for both him and his audience.
What’s Next for Tim Allen?
As for the future, Allen isn’t leaving Disney behind just yet. He’s set to return to the recording studio to voice Buzz Lightyear once more in Toy Story 5, which is slated for release on June 19, 2026.
It seems that while Tim Allen might be retiring from television acting, his Disney journey isn’t over just yet.
Tim Allen’s retirement marks the end of an era for many fans who’ve grown up watching his iconic roles. From Home Improvement to Toy Story and The Santa Clause, Allen’s contributions to Disney and beyond will always be remembered.
