‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Original Cast Member Discusses Potential Return

After years of speculation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is officially making its return, with a new series in development at Hulu. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the iconic actress who played Buffy Summers for seven seasons, has confirmed she’s involved as an executive producer and will appear in some capacity.

While it’s unclear whether she’ll be wielding a stake or passing the torch, her recent Instagram post makes one thing certain—she’s committed to making this revival count.

Taking to Instagram, Gellar shared that the revival has been in the works for three years, starting with what was supposed to be a quick meeting with director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) that turned into a multi-hour conversation. “I have always listened to the fans,” Gellar wrote. “We will only make this show if we know we can do it right.”

She assured longtime viewers that the team behind the show, including writing duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face), are dedicated to honoring the legacy of Buffy.

The announcement has sparked reactions from some of Gellar’s Buffy co-stars. David Boreanaz, who played the tortured vampire Angel, commented, “Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed.”

Charisma Carpenter, who portrayed Cordelia Chase, chimed in as well, stating, “Could there be a more relevant time for such a story?! Long live the slayer, long live the slayer in us all! Congratulations, Sarah.”

Juliet Landau, known for her role as the villainous Drusilla, also shared her excitement, hinting that she would be open to returning. “My gosh, yes,” Landau told RadioTimes.com. “It would be so much fun to play, absolutely.”

She further expressed that the series would benefit from a mix of new and returning cast members, calling it a “key element” in making the reboot successful.

Though little is known about the plot, reports indicate the series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu. Whether the story continues where Buffy the Vampire Slayer left off or explores an alternate timeline remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that this franchise still has plenty of fight left in it.
