6 Disney World Rides Officially Cease Operation in March 2026

Walt Disney World doesn’t look the same as it did even a year ago. Construction walls stretch across familiar walkways. New lands inch closer to reality. Longtime attractions quietly disappear or prepare for a new chapter. Change isn’t coming — it’s already here.

March 2026 makes that especially clear. Several major attractions across multiple parks will be unavailable, whether temporarily for upgrades or permanently as Disney reshapes the resort’s future. If you’re visiting this spring, here’s what won’t be operating and why.

1. Big Thunder’s Extended Makeover

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom closed on January 6, 2025, and Disney expects it to reopen sometime in spring 2026. This isn’t a quick refresh. Imagineers are installing new lighting effects, updating projection elements, and refining the attraction’s haunted mining town storyline to feel more cinematic.

With Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park developing nearby, Disney clearly wants Frontierland’s remaining icons to feel fresh and intentional. Big Thunder will return, but it’s taking its time to do it right.

2. Rafiki’s Planet Watch Makes Way for Bluey

Animal Kingdom said goodbye to Rafiki’s Planet Watch on February 23, 2026. Disney closed the Conservation Station, Affection Section, and Wildlife Express Train to prepare for a brand-new Bluey attraction.

Disney plans to open Bluey in summer 2026, though it hasn’t announced an exact date yet. For years, Planet Watch offered a quieter, education-focused corner of the park. Now, the shift toward a recognizable character signals a broader evolution at Animal Kingdom, especially with Tropical Americas on the horizon.

3. Buzz Lightyear Levels Up

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom closed August 4, 2025, and Disney aims to reopen it in spring 2026. This update goes well beyond a simple refurbishment. The attraction will feature upgraded blasters designed for greater accuracy and responsiveness, along with a new character to guide guests through the mission.

Guests have long joked about unpredictable scoring and finicky targets. Disney responded with a complete gameplay overhaul while preserving the competitive energy fans love.

4. DINOSAUR’s Final Extinction

DINOSAUR officially closed on February 2, 2026, following a final day of operation on February 1. The attraction, which debuted with Animal Kingdom in 1998, now gives way to a new Indiana Jones adventure.

Disney confirmed the ride system will remain, but everything else will transform — from sets to story. With this closure, DinoLand U.S.A. officially ends, and construction walls now signal the park’s next phase.

5. Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Reimagined

Hollywood Studios also feels the impact. Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster closed and will remain unavailable through March 2026 as it becomes Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets.

Disney targets summer 2026 for reopening. While the track stays the same, the music, preshow, and overall theme will shift dramatically. As Animation Courtyard evolves and Monsters, Inc. Land develops nearby, this retheme aligns with Disney’s broader strategy to streamline storytelling across the park.

6. The Railroad’s Modified Route

The Walt Disney World Railroad continues operating on an altered route throughout March 2026. Construction connected to Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land keeps the Frontierland station closed, and trains bypass active work zones.

The railroad remains open, but guests won’t be able to experience its full loop for now. Disney plans to restore and enhance the journey once expansion work concludes.

More Construction in Iconic Spaces

Cinderella Castle also receives a visible refresh during March 2026. Crews are repainting the gold trim and upper turrets in phases so that guests may spot scaffolding from time to time.

At Hollywood Studios, Animation Courtyard remains closed for the new Magic of Disney Animation area. This space will celebrate Disney’s animated legacy while connecting to the nearby growing Monsters, Inc. section.

What It Means for Spring Trips

March traditionally brings heavy spring break crowds, and in 2026, those crowds will navigate a park landscape missing several headliners. Magic Kingdom operates without Big Thunder Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Animal Kingdom moves forward without DINOSAUR and Planet Watch. Hollywood Studios continues its transformation.

It’s a season of disruption — but also reinvestment. Disney isn’t scaling back. It’s rebuilding. By late summer and into 2027, these temporary inconveniences should give way to refreshed classics and entirely new experiences.

March 2026 may feel transitional, but it also signals momentum. The resort is evolving, and guests visiting now are watching that transformation unfold in real time.
