22-Year Pop Century Staple Unexpectedly Vanishes From Disney World (Sept. 23)
Guests walking through Disney’s Pop Century Resort this week may find that one corner of the hotel looks a little different from how they remember.
A familiar piece of the resort’s colorful scenery disappeared on September 23 when crews lifted it from its longtime location and hauled it away. Temporary barriers later appeared in the space it occupied.
There may be a straightforward reason behind the removal. But Disney hasn’t confirmed whether guests should expect to see this piece return.
That leaves an unusual mystery unfolding at a resort built around celebrating the past.
Nearly 23 Years of Pop Culture
Disney’s Pop Century Resort opened in December 2003, bringing a different kind of hotel experience to Walt Disney World.
The Value Resort celebrates American pop culture across five decades: the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
Disney brought those eras to life with oversized decorations. Giant bowling pins, yo-yos, Rubik’s Cubes, rollerblades, and other recognizable objects tower over different sections of the property. Disney characters add even more personality throughout the resort.
That larger-than-life approach has helped make Pop Century instantly recognizable, even as Disney has updated parts of the property.
The Disney Skyliner has also become a major part of the experience of staying there. Guests can use the transportation system to reach EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios instead of relying entirely on buses.
But some of Pop Century’s most memorable features don’t involve transportation or hotel rooms. Smaller pieces of scenery have become familiar sights for returning guests.
One of them is suddenly gone.

Crews Remove An Iconic Landmark
Goofy’s red hot rod had long occupied a spot between the resort’s 1960s and 1970s areas.
That changed on September 23.
A social media video showed crews lifting the vehicle from its usual location and towing it away. The hot rod had been displayed near the courtyard and within walking distance of the Everything POP main building.
According to social media account @DashDestinations, a damaged windshield prompted the removal.
That could offer some hope that the disappearance is temporary. If the windshield simply needs repair or replacement, Disney could eventually bring the vehicle back.
For now, though, Disney hasn’t confirmed that it will happen.
An additional video showed temporary barriers around the area after crews removed the hot rod. Disney hasn’t provided a return date or publicly said whether the vehicle will eventually reclaim its familiar spot.
That leaves guests waiting for answers.
Goofy’s hot rod may not have been an attraction, but it contributed to the quirky atmosphere that separates Pop Century from a standard hotel. Returning guests who remember seeing it during previous vacations may quickly notice that it is missing.
Other Parts of Pop Century Have Changed Too
The removal comes after Disney made several updates around the resort.
Guest rooms received a refresh that added more color without altering their existing layout or functionality.
Warm wood-toned flooring now features a geometric inset that resembles an area rug. Blue, gray, green, and orange appear throughout the flooring, while soft blue tones accent portions of the bed wall and bathroom.
Disney also updated curtains and upholstery. Retro-inspired patterns cover the chairs, complete with Hidden Mickey details incorporated into the fabric.
Other familiar Disney touches survived the refresh.
Pluto still appears on the pull-down bed, sleeping while dreaming about bones. Mickey Mouse artwork also helps maintain the rooms’ colorful pop-art style.
Disney has made changes elsewhere around Pop Century as well. The lobby received bold artwork inspired by different decades and the Fab Five, while Everything POP Shopping & Dining and Petals Pool Bar have also received attention.
The updates give Pop Century a fresher look while preserving much of the colorful nostalgia of its original theme.
Will the Missing Piece Return?
For now, Disney hasn’t provided that answer.
The reported windshield damage gives Disney a logical reason to remove Goofy’s hot rod, and the temporary barriers could point toward additional work in the area.
But neither guarantees that the vehicle will return.
Pop Century reaches its 23rd anniversary in December 2026, making the disappearance particularly noticeable as the hotel approaches another milestone.
Perhaps Goofy’s hot rod is simply away for repairs and will eventually roll back into its familiar home.
Until that happens — or Disney confirms otherwise — one longtime piece of Pop Century nostalgia is officially missing.
