Iconic Wooden Train Coaster To Cease Operations, Future Uncertain

Switchback, the world’s first and only modern wooden shuttle coaster, is nearing the end of its run at ZDT’s Amusement Park in Seguin, Texas. The park has listed the iconic ride for sale, leaving its future uncertain and marking a significant change for the family-owned park.

A Standout Attraction at ZDT’s Amusement Park

Opened in 2015, Switchback was designed to honor the 1884 Switchback Railway, considered the first roller coaster in America. Built by The Gravity Group, the ride became an instant hit for its innovative shuttle design, allowing it to travel both forward and backward—a feature unprecedented for wooden coasters. Switchback quickly gained recognition, earning a ranking among the top wooden roller coasters worldwide.

ZDT’s Amusement Park opened in 2007 and is known for its compact yet engaging attractions spread across its 5.7-acre property. Owned and operated by the Donhauser family, the park offers unique outdoor rides like the Mad Raft Water Coaster and GoKarts, alongside its indoor Family Entertainment Center. Switchback has long been the crown jewel of the park’s lineup.

The Reason Behind the Sale

The sale of Switchback was revealed at the IAAPA Expo 2024 with an advertisement (shared by @midwaymayhem on Instagram) at The Gravity Group’s booth. The coaster is priced at $3.6 million, with The Gravity Group offering support for dismantling, transportation, and reconstruction.

Reports suggest the sale is tied to the retirement of ZDT’s owner, Danny Donhauser. While the theme park continues to operate, the decision to part ways with its flagship attraction reflects an uncertain future for both the coaster and ZDT’s.

The news of Switchback’s impending closure has left fans heartbroken. Many have shared their love for the coaster and disappointment at its departure from ZDT’s.

“Switchback is a really outstanding, if not a little rough, wooden powerhouse,” Instagram user @evan.hempstead wrote. “Super unique ride with backwards airtime. It was one of my favorite coasters in the whole San Antonio area. Hoping it has lots of years left in a new location, but it is really tucked into a small and unique plot of land.”

Others have pointed out the challenges of relocating such a unique coaster, noting its compact layout and innovative design may be challenging to replicate at a new site.

On Reddit, fans debated possible new homes for Switchback, with suggestions ranging from Six Flags Darien Lake to Fun Spot Atlanta. However, many expressed skepticism about the likelihood of its preservation.

“Realistically, only a handful of woodies have been saved,” wrote Redditor u/tideblue. “Unless Knoebels steps up here, I don’t know how likely it is.”
