While Disney parks are often celebrated for their iconic characters and family-friendly attractions, Universal Studios Japan takes pride in delivering high-octane adventures that cater to thrill-seekers. The park is home to an impressive lineup of attractions that push the boundaries of excitement and creativity, making it a must-visit destination for adrenaline junkies.

The Return of Space Fantasy – The Ride

Space Fantasy – The Ride, which replaced the beloved E.T. Adventure in 2010, is a spinning roller coaster that transports guests to a mesmerizing world filled with special effects and immersive theming. “Embark on an adventure through space, full of a sense of freedom,” states the Universal Studios Japan website. “An adventure through space filled with a sense of freedom is about to begin!”

Riders are treated to an exhilarating experience that features interactive projection screens, onboard audio, dazzling lasers, and vibrant fiber optics. Occasionally enhanced with cutting-edge virtual reality technology, Space Fantasy – The Ride showcases Japan’s Cool Japan initiative, which highlights aspects of Japanese culture that international visitors find most captivating.

But after closing its doors in January 2023, fans and park-goers have long voiced concerns about when Space Fantasy—The Ride will reopn.

Now, Universal has confirmed that as of January 25, 2025, the ride will officially welcome guests back.

The bad news? Reports from USJ 1 indicate that it will not feature VR overlays for the Cool Japan initiative in 2025, and budget cuts may prevent the park from participating in this event altogether.

Other Attractions Closed at Universal Studios Japan

Despite the excitement surrounding the return of Space Fantasy – The Ride, several other attractions at Universal Studios Japan remain closed. Ernie’s Rubber Duckie Race, Sesame’s Big Drive, and Universal Spectacle Night Parade: The Best of Hollywood have been closed indefinitely since 2020. Additionally, Jurassic Park—The Ride closed for a two-year refurbishment in September 2023.

Currently, Shrek’s 4-D Adventure and Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic are also out of operation, but both are set to reopen on November 18. The park is poised to launch its SUPER NINTENDO WORLD expansion, Donkey Kong Country, later this year (although there’s still no confirmed date) after experiencing a delayed opening in the spring.
